Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The axe is always hanging above

Unless you are willing and able to move around for different jobs, you can't really look at it as somewhere for a long term career. The axe is always hanging above, making that type of outlook rare from what I've seen.
How active this site is shows how many people are expecting that conference call invite where they tell you your time is up. Hard to plan for a long career in that environment.

I think that @11qu4o5c-6ujp painted a good picture of the uncertainty and toxicity of the environment at T right now

Since I left t I am at my second employer and at both employers there had been zero layoffs or threats of layoffs. T is insane if they keep running the company the way they do.

The only difference I've seen since the late '90's to now, is in the last 2 years, the pace has really picked up, and the numbers of affected people with their sweeps.

This shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone. The company flat out stated there’ll be massive layoffs a few years ago.

I've worked for AT&T now over 20 years, and since the beginning, and all the way till now, there have always been layoffs, surplusing, outsourcing, and MVO's, without fail. The only difference I've seen since the late '90's to now, is in the last 2 years, the pace has really picked up, and the numbers of affected people with their sweeps. Also, the reorgs have also picked up. The reorgs, are because they have finally started to sweep L3 and above, which is LONG overdue. And yes, if you do not bounce around about every 2 years to a new dept, or company, then you won't be saving your skin, you'll be out and in line at the Employment Commission.

Yes, AT&T is a very toxic environment. The mass layoffs began in 2015 with mainly poor performers. Then they focused on the over 50 group with some under 40 thrown in along with occasional MVOs. Now we have moved to both domestic outsourcing where you get rebadged losing your right to severance and offshoring, both of which is hitting employees of all functions and ages. No one is safe and now we are seeing reductions at the L3, L4 level and above as the staff is significantly reduced. That scenario is toxic for 95% of the employees. Only the high level VP and above with good connections will thrive and survive.
