Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Comparing layers of management to other telecom companies

Just curious with Elliott suggesting at&t has too many layers of management how other telecom companies compare like Verizon, T Mobile, Frontier, CenturyLink, etc?
I'm in Mobility and counted from myself to Randall it's 11 levels, which seems excessive.

Stephenson needs a chorus of VPs, SVPs, EVPs, presidents, and even COOs and CEOs to sing his praises and occasionally fall on their swords to insulate his majesty from any trouble. Remember what happened when AT&T got caught paying Cohen for Presidential access? A VP in NY was sacked and Stephenson walked away unharmed. Does anyone believe that something that sensitive didn't have his OK? It's good to be king. LOL.

At one time a "Tech Director" had a large organization, was responsible for ensuring delivery, ensuring funding, managing budget etc. etc.....The title does not really mean much these days and is handed out to anyone and even individual performers with no one reporting to them as someone above mentioned there are so many Directors and Assoc. Directors with no direct reports or one or two people reporting to them.....Makes absolutely no sense....Just another way to promote friends and family.....

Don’t worry, Tech M will solve that. New org charts show less layers of Management.

You know there are too many layers when you see in phone directors with no direct reports. That is insane. Why do you have directors with no one under them? yet they will let go people who do real work. talk about inefficiency.

Fonts matter! Each VP needs a chief of staff to police the fonts!

This is especially true in TD. Back from the days of lack of control on production changes, which is no longer the case. We still have more so called leaders than needed. Many are nothing more than experts in the childhood game of telephone. ironic.

@zpw, yes L3 managers get a 19% annual bonus and L4 get 26%. L3 get at least $150K base, so then they get at least $178k a year with their bonus, and then stock options, different retirement plan, etc..., for every L3 you can have two employees that do real work.

And the total compensation for L3 and above shoots up a lot. Time to Purge L3 and above. Most of them are just blockers in getting things done anyway as they fight to get funding for themselves and silos.

Excessive layers of people trying to justify thier jobs generating 100's of roadblock and rules which greatly impede 1st line techs to efficiently do thier job. .......Supposedly the MSOC firing gun will be applied to techs ...... last time lots of workers fired, lots of disabilty cases ,lots of law suits, and lots of accidents —Yes this Company needs weed out numerous layers of management.Mr Singer, you are correct

Vz has too many layers as well. VPs reporting to VPs. Too many execs and not enough worker bees.

@wam

…"avp,vp,sr. vp…"

Your forgot EVP's. Too many VP's, you just don't see this elsewhere. Way too top heavy with expensive people.

Yeah that's kind of their point....from Elliott Management's letter:

"AT&T’s organization is unnecessarily complicated and inefficient, including a management layer that can be streamlined by reducing spans and layers and title proliferation. Many functions – including finance, HR, marketing, sales, legal and others – are much larger than benchmarks (up to as much as 2x to 3x peer ratios) and have the opportunity for rightsizing and simplification"

To me it's not the L1 and L2's ….but once you get to L3 and above there are just too many of them. Span of control (# of direct reports) for L1 and L2 has gone up steadily over the last few years as management layoffs have largely been targeted at that level. The duplicity and redundancy once you get to Director and VP (AVP, EVP, SVP, etc. etc.) is ridiculous. Keep the sharp ones and offload the dead weight, these are expensive employees.

Unless they have built in 5 layers in the last two years the lowest employee should only be 7 from Randall. 8 tops, since he stuck Stanky in there. Manager, second line manager, director, avp,vp,sr. vp COO , CEO.
