I was wondering if someone knows, do the people that get laid off at AT&T apply for jobs and get jobs. Do they stay in the business or do they mainly go on to other industries? I understand that it’s hard to have any official info that could answer my question, but i was hoping to get some experiences from laid off folks on what was their first choice after AT&T and where did they end up in the end?

Laid off in March, took the whole summer off and after 20 years in Telecommunications and I made the decision to leave the industry. Starting a government job in the next 2 weeks.
A friend was laid off 3 years ago. Went to work for a smaller company providing IP telephone solutions in NYC. Now he’s a Director. We laughed that ATT did him a favor. There is no real room for advancement here. You could perform well for 30 years are still not make it to 2nd level. Meanwhile you’d be a VP at a smaller company.
I didn’t get laid off but I left a while back. Ended up at another utility company and so far so good. I do feel like an outsider occasionally since a lot of these people have worked together for years, and this utility does things quite a bit differently then At&t did. I had almost 20 years when I left. But the new employer really treats its employees well. Good luck to you
LOA doesn't stop one from being surplused. On the other hand managers may realize that they aren't missing anything when you are not around so you may be higher on the list when they decide to get rid of someone assuming seniority doesn't play into it.
After 10 years Services Technician Surplused. I didn't do much for 6 months. When I was ready I found 2 telecom industry jobs that i took and ended up leaving. Lower pay and job security were my reasons for leaving. I then found something as a government contractor with ATMP. (Look it up). I had IT skills and prior military. I now have great job and pay, with great benefits. 7 year contract and am treated with respect. You may have to trial a few jobs. But never settle until you are in the right place.

Well duh. It’s spelled out in the leave of absence policy. Who in their right mind thinks LOA time counts toward years of service?!

Laid off AT&T employees don’t go away, they just fade away. an old phone man who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty.
@1lsb- I would check with HR before you leave to inquire about leave time affecting your service years. My co-worker was hurt in an accident and was out for a little less than a year. Shortly after she returned she realized she was not up to her job. She had reached her 20 while she was on leave. When she left the company she was told her LOA time was debited from her 20 years. She did not receive her full benefits.

Take advantage of the services offered by Lee, Hecht & Harrison. They will put you in the best possible position to find another job.
EDD (Unemployment) also provides Job Centers where you can consult with a coach to prepare for a new job. WIOA, or the Worforce Initiative Opportunities Act, offers a long spreadsheet of in-demand jobs the government will pay for if the Job Center approves and when you have finished training they will do what they can to help you find a job in that field.
I have taken advantage of these options and I recommend them to you, especially if you want to move out of telecom into a different field. This will also give you hope and help you out of your depression. I know. Good luck all!
the current employees w/o a pension accruing , particularly in tech, should look elsewhere when the right opportunity shows up. in the end they don't give a flying f— how "important" (quotes emphasized) you are when they can end up replacing you with someone for five bucks an hour. it will be so much better , you wont have to put up without any arrogant d–k heads anymore that don't know diddly squat brainwashing you not to leave the funny farm. they only need you now to make themselves look better so they themselves can meet their rule of MR 75 and then they will f— you into hell.
I went on TLOA until Dec. of this year to get to my 20 years. Counting down the days. Will be extremely happy to be fully away form Randy The Clown. Will always look back on my time on the job, with my union brothers and sisters, with fond memories. Will look back on all my managers, with utter contempt and distain. Especially 4th line managers, and above. All were/are clowns, IMVHO. Betty you will burn in you know where...........
The majority I would say stay within their comfort zone and end up working for an ATT contractor. After 26 years and 5 months full time and an additional 4 summers as a temp I was removed from my position. I had enough of the telecom business and looked outside that type of business.
They starve, and then they die.
They come to this site to talk about how their new jobs are so much better. Then urge existing At&t employees to quit.
Otherwise they come this site to write bitter replies wishing ill will to AT&T. Then urge existing At&t employees to quit.
They set sail to the west, to the undying lands, where they will be rewarded for their service
Government jobs are popular. They typically have their own telecom depts.
