Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Headcount is only headed one direction

Not sure if you can distinguish between union and non bargained employees but I believe AT&T releases total number of employees 1st quarter every year. It will be interesting to see the difference from 2019-2020. Between surplus, outsourcing, firings, retirements and people leaving for other opportunities I’d say it’s safe to assume headcount went down dramatically in 2019 and the year isn’t over yet. My group went down over 20% between surplus and retirements this year and I’ve seen a lot worse from others in this market center. If I remember correctly AT&T reported around 270k employees 1st qtr of 2019 for calendar year 2018, if we went down 10-20% company wide you are potentially looking at 27-54k employees leaving payroll in one year. Keep in mind the numbers might not be reflected in total headcount since the company is always hiring entry level positions. I’d think the union would know exactly how many bargained for employees were impacted by surplus and ultimately left payroll including specifics on title and region. I personally think that outsourcing will be the preferred method in 2020, it saves the company money compared to traditional surplus/layoffs because there is no severance or medical benefit liability and pension obligation is rolled off AT&T books. Bottom line is, headcount is only headed one direction.
