Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

No Direction

When the employees have no faith in upper management’s direction, it’s hard to stay positive.

Their plan was that the fiber fed ethernet and GPON was to take less time to install and maintain thus requiring less people. The problem is some take more than the computer models predict. Now management is scrambling with all the missed obligations and will have to be fired. You wanted management, so now you have to get another job. Quit crying.

@2azu, I’m a fan of your post...in theory, but even if you threw Randy and his posse, out on their "parachutes" and brought in the best CEO there is, he/she could only try to accomplish point #3:
"Invest in your workforce and make them happy again." This would be the easiest, of your points to make successful.

Determining the employees needed to work "effectively and without waste," definitely requires a telecom mind, someone who can see around the corner and knows what’s coming. As quickly as this business moves we can’t afford an outsider, untested to what is unfamiliar, and I’m not sure that talent exists in this line of work.

And no CEO would ever agree to point #2, "Make a final workforce reduction," with the idea that this would be the "final cut." Again, the speed of business prohibits such a guarantee and job cuts will just be the new ‘normal.’

We need someone who can lead, not a bean counter like Randall. This is What is needed.

  1. Determine the amount of employees needed to operate effectively and without waste.
  1. Make a final workforce reduction with the caveat that this will be the final cut. Those who remain will be the future of ATT.
  1. Invest in your workforce and make them happy again.

The biggest mistake ATT made were these layoffs that have been regularly occurring for five years now.

If you need to reduce headcount, you do it ONCE and you move forward!

Anyone with any leadership skills can see how this would demoralize a workforce. If your employees are not happy, you will fail.

Get a clue ATT!

You’re all just cogs in this huge machine. Just do your part. I hope the broken cogs do get replaced by foreign made better performing cogs.

Sure. Outsource more to Tech M and Wipro.

You go on calls with them and don't get a straight answer. Nothing is never a problem. Look at the mess from Amdocs.

Sending people to India to train from the Amdocs mess.

What happened to keep the jobs here?

The boat loaded with gold in the middle of the ocean had a growing hole and was sinking. Rather than invest time in repairing the hole Captains Stankey and Stevenson ordered the wiring of $110B of for $80B worth of gold to be loaded from a second ship onto their ship. These guys must think their is a Future Trillion Dollar Opportunity for ATT in Harvard Business Case Materials on Failure.

I agree. Every time I’m told “stay focused” by these jokers I think - I will when you assure me My future is secure and you care more about employees than your millions of dollars in bonuses. I’m paralyzed with worry and just doing the minimum to get by. I’ve never been like this until recently. Shame on them.

Where is the new blood from a Disney, Netflix, Amazon ,Google? Oh that's right ATT knows this space so much better. So much better that they are driving off all the intellectual capital from Warner straight into new ventures and the competition. The level of Arrogance and Stupidity is on all full display for everyone and they effectively lost the support and confidence of 95% of their employee base. Could have left HBO alone and had that be the best lower margin leader of your business but instead will be known as the Deathstar who blew it up and p-ss-d off over a hundred million subscribers who will run from you forever. Reminds me of Costanza soiling Babe Ruth's uniform and he gets raises and promotions. George Costanza is running ATT.

Reshuffling has to be one of the most destructive ways to destabilize organizations and the fact that T does it every month. It shows a lack of long term planning and strategizing. This is clearly been made up as we go.

Its the same people in the reshuffling layers, there are no new ideas coming in no new ways of thinking. The positions that these individuals hold should be critical to the success to those under their branches. If they can be reshuffled so easily it means that they are just dummy placeholders. Friends passing the control and power between themselves.

As a first level manager it’s terrifying yet unsurprising how little my leadership actually understands. Excluding my direct supervisor who was promoted from a title I now hold no one else in my leadership chain originated in my organization. This lack of deep understanding is obvious in the decisions being made but in good with it - keeps me employed.

Chasing, overpaying, and missing big. Based on history they will botch Time Warner and it already appears they are well on their way with destroying HBO. They own the libraries but does anyone have faith that creative talent can flourish and produce under the AT&T Wall Cloud? A career telecom guy who was below average in Telecom telling HBO Chief he is doing it all wrong yet basking in the glow of all of HBO's Emmy Awards. That is the shining example of AT&T's operational sludge that has filtered down. Hubris, Scorecards, and Yes Men telling the guy behind Sopranos, Wire, and GOT that he is doing it all wrong.
