Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

All people that work from home are in danger

If they’re outsourcing entire units to other locations around the world, there is definitely little hope that working from home will survive as a concept in the US. Not that I agree with it, but their logic is simple: If work can be done from a remote location, why not allocate it where labor is the cheapest. Everyone who works from home should be worried.

@-4eka, I think you're the same jackwagon who is always coming here and saying, "Says the person who...". Stop being a tardbot. The poster whom you're being nasty too, is 100% correct with his statement. Open your eyes. notice what he's saying is what's been happening all around us.

Working from home concept within T is still highly unacceptable, frowned upon and considered as lazy, less productive workers. This thinking is obsolete and not going to attract young talents (in which they discussed on recent lwd how-to) lol i myself have no issues sniffing nostrils daily with my coworkers, but they moved me so far to report to a particular office where i was working fine 5x a day 20 miles to my house. Now i gotta travel daily for 60 milea a day just to sniff peoples a– at work.

"if you're working in an office environment chances are it's some type of knowledge or service role, which are imminently outsourcable"

says the person who works from home

maybe you'd be less outsourcable, if you learned to spell outsourceable

You're delusional if you think simply coming into the office protects your job in any fashion. Entire physical industries have been offshored and if you're working in an office environment chances are it's some type of knowledge or service role, which are imminently outsourcable. Being physically present does not make you any less replaceable when the current quarters numbers need to be met. Just ask any of the people moved recently over to Tech Mahinda, Accenture or IBM how being in a CZ saved their butts.

"update your resumes and get them out there now"

No. I think I'll just keep working here another 20 years. But thanks anyway.

Verizon did all this in 2003. Same playbook to a T. Offer package, then cut, then outsource galore while dumping real estate in fire sales to then lease the space back to free up capital.

Stock was trading at or around $32, now it is close to $60 17 yrs. later. It was very painful and the customer certainly felt the impact, but the company kept on.

My advice, update your resumes and get them out there now because if you have not, I can assure you, your co-workers have for I went to one of the outsourced vendors as a corporate group manager who hired many of us and I am getting inundated with inquiries and cold resumes from AT&T specialists, managers and directors.

Best of luck because this stinks, especially to the 20+ yr middle and sr. mgrs. UPDATE and SEND OUT your resumes NOW and be prepared to accept less than what you were making for Telco salaries are/were much closer to the top tier than middle/norm.

"Nobody can work from home anymore. At least not in ATO, not under McRotten and definitely not under buzz world child Marachel."

100% incorrect statement. Plenty of folks in ATO have WFH approval

Gone are the middle managers that everybody hated. They were removed with the span of control expansions. The middle managers were the ones who made sure the project x deadline was met and project y was assigned. Now, the area managers do all of the high profile work and of their 10-20 person team they really only lead 3-5 of them and the rest they cannot control because their too busy. Work is being performed that doesn’t need to be done while at the same time critical work is not being done or being done poorly because all of the smart remote employees were cut a while ago. It’s time to circle the wagons and insert some middle managers (think squad leader or corporal) to follow up with each milestone and coach people out (fire them) who are not getting work done. Insanity is continuing to do the same thing and expect a different outcome. Sanity will return if you inspect what you expect. Bonus points if you’ve heard that saying. It was in the chorus when we dominated everything...

"Collaboration" is nothing but a scam. There are research studies showing that the open office concept, i.e. collaboration, is a dead-end, both for the company and the employees.

Productivity plummets; there's no privacy; it's too noisy, it's too uncomfortable, it's too stressful.

Any real estate cost savings are likely outweighed by the loss in productivity and morale.

To say that "nobody can work from home anymore" is an over-statement. That may be true in some business units, but I know people who work from home, particularly in Sales.

All the folks who were made to go back to an office, most of them have just been outsourced, so they all packed up and went home. What good did "collaboration" do for them?

Also, billings operations management announced this week that offshore workers in Slovakia and Brataslavia will be outsourced to Accenture, but no announcement yet regarding U.S. workers.

Seems highly likely that U.S. workers will be let go, either in 2019 or 2020.

It's worth thinking about. Has AT&T's effort over the last couple years to allow VO just been an experiment to determine if US employees are dispensable & replaceable? Maybe so. While Elliot Management has accelerated the surplus/offshore plan, it's been gradually happening for a while.

I agree with the first post. They also target folks who work from home, as easy pickings to get them to quit, when they are told that they will have to begin reporting to an office.

On the other hand, they are selling real estate left and right, and not having that overhead is good way to reduce expenses.

But the current management (legacy SBC/Southwestern Bell) has never liked or really supported working from home.
