Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Move, drive or quit

I will never understand why CWA would go along with this obviously blatant strategy to get employees to "leave the business." I don't know of anyone in any other company who can be let go in "surplus" status because they refuse to accept a "job offer" that can be anywhere in the state. Why didn't the union fight this?

CWA has been phasing out any meaningful representation for it's members over the last several contracts. The current CWA leaders are just padding their bank accounts while they can and then most likely will just move on to another Union affiliated company to s— off of after the CWA is left decimated.

Since when does wanting to continue working at their location make someone an "entitled whiner?" This is ridiculous especially given the fact that there is plenty of work and not only that but all of the work that was "moved" to Bratislava, Philippines, India, Mexico and Salvador can easily be done here in America. We have been brainwashed into thinking that owners of capital can do whatever they want and now resistance to it is considered "whining." Wow, this is America in 2019.

It’s been that way the past 20+ years. At least they paying for your relocation.

You entitled whiners. Most companies just show you the door with no opportunity to relocate.

The surplus force movement process only works for those who are single or are only earners in a household or make more money than their partner. Otherwise, the options are not exactly thrilling:

  1. Take severance and look for another job
  2. Have your partner quit their job and move with your close to a new work location. No guarantee that you will not be surplussed again!
  3. Assuming that driving is even possible, drive up to 1,000 miles a week to work in a new location. Destroy your car and strain your marriage in the process!
  4. Your partner stays put, you move to a new location and have a long distance marriage. Just wonderful!

We should not be tolerating this as a country and deserve better worker protections like they have in western europe.

Are you serious? Name a large company that eliminates positions in one location that doesn’t let people go if they refuse to take a position in the new location if they can’t find work in the original locations. Take it you have no knowledge of GM closing plants and the subsequent “we will try and find jobs in other locations bs they put out.
