When I left AT&T, and my employee discount was terminated, I cancelled my direct TV.
My viewing was done with mostly netflix and Amazon prime, so I saw no reason to continue at the
subscriber rate. This weekend, i removed the dish, disconnected the coax at the feedhorn, and I installed a outside HDTV antenna. This was incredible easy to do, and I receive 34 channels from my local market. Another thing to note, in my neighbourhood we put things out on the curb for people to take. In the past I was able to get rid of air conditioners, canopy tents that are damaged, but no one is biting on the dish and feedhorn. I am hoping the trash pick up will take it.

Arg, Trash pickers and the town would not take the dish, Going to have to cut it up with a sawzall.
Took my dog out this am, and he relieved himself on the dish. What a smart dog.
I've grabbed a few free dishes, but I took them down myself. I take them mobile with my DVR. Using a free iPhone app and the meters in the HR54 setup menus, I can set it up in under a minute with mid to high 90's on all 99, 101, and 103 transponders.
The reason why anyone who knows what to do with a reomoved dish doesn't want it is that they are surprisingly delicate. I had one of my mobile examples fall over in the wind, about a 2' drop. With no visible damage, it would never grab a signal again. The LNB was fine, the dish or arm was damaged just enough to prevent it from focusing. Without knowing the care used removing and lowering a dish to the ground, I assume it was dropped and drive right by.
Left all the brackets bolted to the roof and put the dish in the basement for the next homeowner.
Why remove it? The ODU it self would of given you multiple off air channels. All you needed to do is to connect the coax that was going to the Boxes into your tvs coax in, then just scan. You would be surprised at how many ex customers use the ODU that way.
OP here, I left the mast and installed the hdtv antenna to it.
Was the dish on your roof? If so, what did you do to make sure the roof didn't leak wear the bolt holes were?
lol yeah i see those direct tv dishes in my neighborhood all the time no one ever takes them.
