Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

With Randall EXIT the 2020 experiment is over

As Stephenson told the New York Times in may 2016, the company has to look forward and transform; if it doesn’t succeed at retraining and reinvention, he said, “mark my words, in three years we’ll be managing decline and That is why he is on his way out, .”The illusion was Created by business people, course bundles created by Udacity, “nanodegree” programs that did not deliver the expected ROI. With all the training and certification expenditures in high-demand for all technical specialties that were deployed such as software engineering, coding, and web development. AT&T was not able transforming a programmer into a software engineer at the end, therefore the outsoucing of projects accelerated in the 1st quarter 2019 Accentuire, TechMantra, and IBM

AT&T’s 2020 sounds like it was all a PR stunt. Tell employees hyped about certifications, nano degrees, etc as your jobs will no longer be operating 2020 as they are today, so get on the bandwagon. You got on the bandwagon but it didn’t matter. Tell the world you are transforming company employees so they can compete with other technology forces. My opinion, all done to cover future mass reductions(a lot of educated and high performing employees caught in the mix). So if your number didn’t come up, count it as luck! If you need to work, prepare yourself for trending 2020+ careers in the outside world where your grandchildren are hiring managers and you’re 40+. Brush up on social media and many apps out there. Most of all, get ready for AT&T’s next strategic alignment as it reorganizes, reduces debt and look out for self in the meantime. Make the most in the new workplace environment.

That whole retraining program was a joke. All of T University for management is too. If you want something portable, go to a state university and get a BS or MS. I have both; never had a problem getting interviews. All the T classes are like the first hr of an intro class, just teaser info, no meat.

Came to T because: (1) they gave me a sweet scholarhip to get that BS. (2) pays better than real engineering. (3) benefits are better than real engineering. (4) 1.5x overtime pay that doesn't exist in real engineering. When I get laid off or bored, my butt can be in another chair down the street PDQ though. Prolly making less, working more, and less bennies. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

They couldn’t transform software engineers into att software engineers. Their training was a joke. If you want split hairs between a software engineer and a programmer go ahead. Still creating algorithms one way or another and thinking logically. Either one still has to deal with specs and understand the business and the purpose of your work.

With Donovan out and his disruptive effect of DTV in the market on features and capabilities project ending with his spectacular exit, AT&T has clearly communicated to everyone that video subscriber losses are going to continue and has placed the focus on financial metrics within its entertainment business, a business they don't know much about Indeed, and despite massive video subscriber losses accelerating in the third quarter another million subscriber lost be reported in late October, management remains numb about the direction of the company
I say is time to get new blood, old ideas, Big egos.
