Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Should Do These 3 Things Today

T is really bad at downsizing, so you'd best get going while the going is good.

It's no secret that T is in big trouble. The company will be forcedto cut its formerly-reliable dividends in half and its newly appointed CEO may not be who you think will be. The stock is one of the worst performing stocks for a company this size, since cutting jobs became a routine, we will lose about 18% of the workforce in the future, not counting the sale of DTV. if a buyer can be located of course …It's not a pretty picture.

  1. Wake up and smell the (stale) coffee.
  2. Activate as many of your outside contacts as possible.

Getting laid off from a big company like AT&T creates a huge career challenge for three reasons:
You're now carrying the stigma of a loser company. "I worked for AT&T" might have impressed people in the past but eventually (i.e. sooner than you think), you'll be admitting, rather than bragging, that you once there.

  1. Take the package, if offered.

When they ask for volunteers, who in return for leaving of their own free will receive a "golden parachute" usually consisting of extra compensation. If you're offered such a parachute, take it, and RUN to a Career Oriented company.
unfortunately AT&T is not one of them anymore.

Cutting the dividend is a nonstarter. Layoffs sure, reducing CAPEX sure, selling real estate sure. These steps are what all companies do periodically. Dividend cuts for a company with as much FCF as T is unnecessary.

Post ID: @11aYE3lv-1dbz .."Total return for AT&T stock is 39.34% Year to date," what about the last 10 years? that is the reason some of you work for AT&T ..no foresight... year to date...LOL

@1bz, you are correct that is has been a good year so far. What many fail to realize is that T is still a few dollars below where it was 9/2007. That is a negative return over 12 years without dividends. Compare the price to where competitors, Dow, S&P and so on were in 2007 vs now. Obviously the destruction by design changes to an all wireless all IP world have not returned well. By the way, who took over as CEO in 2007?

T is in big trouble? $91 Billion profit last year. Looks like probably $98 Billion this year. T is forced to cut it's dividend in half? Where's your source for that one? Paying the dividend only costs them less than $15 Billion a year. The stock is one of the worst performing stocks? Total return for AT&T stock is 39.34% Year to date. Meanwhile the S&P 500 total return is 21.13%.

What makes anyone think there will be another voluntary offer? And what are these "packages" and "golden parachutes"? In the unlikely event they even do another voluntary surplus, it's just standard severance. It's easier and more cost effective to simply force folks into an office 100 miles away and have them quit.

They would probably cut the bonus (similar to the failed acquisition of T-Mobile to pay for its 5+billion Failure) before they cut the dividend

Check your states unemployment laws before volunteering for surplus. From what I’ve heard, there are some that disqualify you for that.

They still generate too much cash to cut the dividend. That's what's holding this company up. Lots of cash, and people send tons of it every month.

They won’t be cutting the dividend. It would cause the stock’s bottom to fall out if they did and they know it. Plus , the company can easily pay the dividend and in fact will probably raise it another penny in dec. nope , they won’t cut the dividend but they will and are cutting plenty of jobs. Thanks Randy StiffUSson.
