Performance Ratings BS - you'll never earn what you deserve

Here come the annual performance ratings BS. Regardless of your actual contribution to the business. Top performing employees will be hard pressed to be given a leading. The b—s— managers are being told about their employee rating is outright sad!! It is no wonder employees are leaving the organization in droves!! The company will rot from the inside as they fail to develop employees and under rate high performers!!

You should never reward a newly hired employee with leading, your well seasoned and hard working employees are more deserving. The new employee can be leading down the road but but if you give your leading to the new hire evoke t your other hard working employees to shut down.

@11ZI5Ee9-5dit It may be part of the management compensation package today, but they can get rid of it anytime they want.

@11ZI5Ee9-1ngd, the bonus is not a freebie, it is part of the management compensation package. It is money put "at risk" . It's money you lose if your performance is not up to par, not extra money.

We hired an exceptional employee this year. The problem is that I have only one Leading slot to fill. This blocks me from rewarding one of the high performers we managed to retain. I worry that they'll connect the dots and adjust their performance accordingly.

What do you mean you'll never earn what you deserve??? As a management employee, the salary ranges are competitive to the market (or better) and reviewed every year. If you are at or below market and meet your objectives, you are eligible for a decent increase. If you are above market, your increase is smaller, but you are still eligible. The bonus system is a freebie really. They could take that away anytime they want. If you depend on that as part of your total comp, shame on you. Lots of companies have already done away with bonuses. If you feel you are not being paid to market, then you should perhaps look elsewhere.

@1ytj You have no clue. In many groups no one gets leading because they don't want to take away from any one group of Performing to finance it. Leading is truly meant for those who ALWAYS exceed their objectives. If you have that many people doing that, then the objectives are not high enough. Trust me, it's a budget game.

Yo it’s not the numbers if the best people get the leading ratings . The last two responses are examples as why some need to be developing

Each manager is given a budget that only allows for maybe 1 or 2 leading ratings amongst all their direct reports. Like the below person said, its all about numbers not actual performance.

It's all a game of numbers. You haven't figured that out yet?

What type of high-performer works for Verizon? We are a bloated telecommunications company filled with bureaucracy and politicians. Work for another company if you care about performance reviews.
