Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

More than 13k so far this year

I have been running an SQL query on webphone ever since the first surplus back on January 21, 2019. As of today 10/29 we have dropped 13,470 employees. From 261,764 on 1/21 to 248,294 on 10/29.

Losses by mgt level (1/21-10/29):
NM lost 8409
1st lost 2568
2nd lost 2369
3rd lost 69
4th lost 11
5th lost 40
6th lost 4

Credit goes to @11Lshq96-cbw.

Also keep in mind the company has been hiring in certain positions while laying off in others so they could have let ten thousand employees go and hired five thousand into lower paying sales/retail positions with no pension. I’d say it’s safe to assume whatever the % of reduced headcount you see by 2nd quarter 2020 you can add to that considerably by factoring in new hires over the same period. If AT&T let’s 2,000 2nd line managers go that average 100k+ a year plus pension then rehire 1,500 sales associates at 35-40k with no pension and a two weeks vacation... the company saved a lot of money

Contractor totals may be misleading because they would include vendor staff that have regular access to AT&T sites. If outsourced employees remain in the same place they would fall into that category. The accuracy also seems to be up to the AT&T manager that contractors show up as reporting to. I know of some that have shown up months after they have left.

To the person that said 26% reduction. No, 262K to 248K is only a 5% reduction so your math skills are very questionable.

I have had a similar idea since sept 4th. I am pulling that data weekly and it has contractor and employee breakdown by leader level

Webphone doesn’t tell the full story for the decrease in the number of employees. You’ve got to factor in voluntary retirements, resignations, deaths and terminations due to whatever reason. Unless you’ve got some way of identifying how many were actually surplused these numbers are misleading.

So almost 26% total, and we went from 261,764 on 1/21 to 248,294 on 10/29. In previous rumor mill reporting, I heard they are gunning for something like 150K. So about another 150K needs to get the axe. Even if to get just under 200K (prob still too top heavy), we gotta lose at least 50K more people. And so in this year we have only lost 13.5K. they've hardly made a dent if the rumor goal holds. Surely there is more fat to trim before they start hitting flesh in just reaching 50K. I think, like others here, the real blood bath has not even begun, and it's going to be very bloody throughout 2020, as they can't off 50-100K people that fast (even the outsource hit a bottleneck of processing throughput). Just wow.

The query pulls by country code, which I filter to only country code=USA. I originally didn't disseminate between contractors and FTE but see there is a field for "contractor flag".

Based off of original post with numbers from 10/29 here is the current employee count and reduction %.

NM 97,616 - 7.93% reduction
1st 67,684 - 3.66% reduction
2nd 73,522 - 3.12% reduction
3rd 6,342 - 1.08% reduction
4th 2,423 - 0.45% reduction
5th 582 - 6.60% reduction
6th 141 - 2.76% reduction

I knew that SOMEHOW, that 2020 training would become useful...

For the field and call center folks - many 2nd levels are managers in title only. They are mostly worker bees at an office.

My team lost 60% this year. Then the work load increased more than it ever has. It’s been a miserable year in our group.

Well I wonder at least in D9 the prem and ir techs are now in the same department and in April the contract expires. Will prems go to A or ir to E ? They will be major cuts in craft. My understanding is for every 3 techs 1 will go. So they real layoffs are yet to come. What has happened in the last 2 years is just cutting the fat. Now that the fat is gone now the real cuts start. And also what about the direct tv techs.

What percentage, by level, does that equate to? In other words, how many 5th levels did we have when the query started compared to what we have now.

Did you run a query on the changes from employee to contractor?
