Puerto Rico is hardly what’s classified as a “rural” market from a wireless perspective.

Rural areas have always been subsidized by the cities. The phone company was regulated and therefore required to service those areas. There is no profit in rural areas.
Who wants to buy those areas? And will the FCC and/or Local/State Govt allow it? A more likely solution will be to let them rot and abandon.
They might just mothball it. 600MHZ is the kind of frequency that will work in rural areas, and I'm beginning to see T-Mobile market a 5G flavor.
Good point. My question would be how much of a impact will the deployment of the wide swath of spectrum improve the wireless in a lot of those areas especially when 5G is added to the mix next year. Obviously that 5G will not facilitate self driving cars, etc. but I would think that there will be substantial improvement.
Don't think they can get rid of it yet. Being used to bury fiber install costs on the wireline side, including costs for fiber to cell towers.
They lose money and only have service because of government mandate. No one is dumb enough to to buy that.

I don't think AT&T is breaking even on landline. Even the copper Uverse took a hit this quarter. It's cable or fiber going forward.
But who's dumb enough and left to buy AT&T's used up garbage? Frontier is on the verge of bankruptcy.
