Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T Selling Off It's Crown Jewels

As of October 25, AT&T has finished selling off the last of it's North American cell towers. As Randall sells the very assets the built this company, what is he spending the money on?

Media content. A business whose value lies in the creativity and inspiration of it's employees. The kind of creative spirit that arrogant managers like Stanky trample on and destroy.

When AT&T is finished with Time Warner Media, there will be nothing of value left. We will have sold valuable assets that provided a steady income stream for a Media company that is completely incompatible with AT&T's management philosophy.

The tower sale makes sense, it's not T's crown jewels, those would be the spectrum allocation rights and network infrastructure they own, the towers are useless without an FCC license to use the wireless spectrum.

Wireless will go the way of landlines. Just a commodity now, everybody and their grandmother will offer wireless service.

Believe it or not most macro sites will be gone in the next 10 yrs. Small cells that only require small physical space will rule the industry.

@1gbo, if it were a financial loss to own and lease a cell tower, why would anyone build or buy them in the first place? Why would Real Estate Investment Trusts be amassing portfolios of towers coast to coast?

Unfortunately the C-suit shares your point of view. Randal's wet dream is to have a company with no American workers, other than executives. If it means he loses money on leasing back real estate and infrastructure that the company used to own, he's too g0ddamm shortsighted to care, as long as he can lower his employee headcount as close to zero as possible.

"It's cheaper to lease space on 3rd party towers than leasing space to others and maintaining their own towers. You also reduce headcount!"

Think about that for a moment. That means that the buyer must intend to use them as a cash flow machine. Maintenance will suffer and there will be more infrastructure destruction by financial shenanigans. When are Americans going to wake up to the theft that is going on? Steal a bottle of formula go to jail but if you steal millions or billions by financial shenanigans and you get off scott free. It's way past time to wake up and start incarcerating these guys. The 2008 crisis, the opiate crisis, the disinvestment in our vital infrastructure. What will it take for people to wake up?

Might be cheaper in the short term but in the long term att will be at the owner’s mercy when lease expires and it’s time to re-negotiate. They will have zero leverage. Of course , stankey and Randy will be long gone by then so they don’t care about long term. They never have.

This is probably the right move. These tower assets follow utility business models which are very different from many products and services the company currently offers and have high capex costs and stable revenues (read "foreseeable growth potentials") but tons of liabilities, especially in vulnerable areas (due to climate changes). It could be more economical to have regional tower companies serving multiple operators instead of each operator has its own.
