Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Collaboration Zones

How are they working out for everyone? Has anyone taken MVO or quit yet due to some of the hardships involved?

It appears to have been the company’s strategy to reduce headcount. I’m too stubborn to quit, I’ve dedicated years of loyalty & hard work to just leave without some compensation

Lol vpn reports? In our dept they recently made wfh as a price if u were to donate money for a cause.. $50 the highest to be able to wfh for 5 days, $10 minimum. Then they also have a raffle where we each submitted our name for a chance to wfh for a week! 2 people won... so who's checking the vpn again? These people PAID their wfh folks! ATO here under Marachel now VB.

" I always heard they viewed VPN reports"

I think all of us for sure have at least HEARD this. I used to be an AM quite a while back, and I happen to know those reports do in fact exist (even though I never actually saw one back then). CRE used to utilize them when trying to maximize office space. I.E. they needed a seat for someone or even a legit office with a door for a L3 or higher, they would look at who had dedicated space that NEVER used it based on their VPN time, and maybe take it from them for someone that legit needed the full time office space. I don't doubt that it's happened, but in 20+ years I personally have never heard of someone getting the boot based on their VPN usage. Additionally, some organizations use HVD. HVD can not be tracked in that manner. You are accessing your desktop in the cloud, no matter where you are .

Our group has been reminded that we need to report to CZ. Heard from leadership they will pull vpn reports and have to be in office 80%+ of the time or else. Not sure what or else means but probably disciplinary action.

If you are in a position to be insubordinate and don’t care, then go for it. Don’t be naive to think you can’t be tracked ie ... card swipes, vpn, key logging, cameras, peers, your manager etc...

Until the policy changes you should follow the expectation. It will probably change in the near future but with the current environment I wouldn’t push it.

As far as tracking work from home, I always heard they viewed VPN reports. It seems like that would be a very easy way to know who is working remote.

" I dont care, i still wfh 2 to 3x a week and if they lay me off because i am actually working from home then so be it.

I happen to agree with this tactic, especially for those that are forced into an office where none of their peers or anyone else in their entire workgroup work. This is my situation. No one even under my L3 in the location. So just don't do it. Who's going to know? And though we hear from the tinfoil hat types about the camera surveillance and the badge swipes, you're giving them too much credit. The Company does not have the resources or the follow through or the resolve to track all of that. When in doubt, always comes back to this: No one cares. Leadership moves have been rampant over the last couple months, one of the moves in ATO was involving a VP that sort of championed this whole mess into a new role. In a year or two, no one will remember any of it. No one cares (repeat it with me...).

Outsourced to Tech M. Left the CZ and never looked back. A year of wasted time, gas & money for NOTHING, just to placate some SVP in Dallas who sent me packing off to TM.

They are working out great! instead of the 8hrs when working from home, now the employees get to start at 10am and go home at 2pm.

Who really fing cares? Do as you are asked, collect your check and go home. Let the decision makers be on the hook for their decisions. You need to learn how to be a shoulder shrugger. You act like having the ideas and the desire to make this place better matters. For the record, loyalty = too lazy to move on.

Funny, but your "troll" co-worker would still have been annoying had they been able to telecommute, and had YOU been able to telecommute, you could have better scheduled your time to avoid various annoyances.

But keep on chugging that korporate koolaid.

Show me the MVO and I’ll collaborate with myself independently. CZ ‘s are BS

Collaboration zone worked great for me. Finally got rid of the old troll on the team who refused to share any information and was always Away or In A Meeting on Q. Every team used to have at least one. You could spot them by checking if they bothered to sign into Skype or only Q

Harvard study says open-plan offices are a failure. They actually decrease rather than increase employee collaboration. Other studies say the same thing. Yet AT&T continues to spend money creating them. Always behind the curve. And if they want to save money, WFH cost them nothing.

Stack ranking also mentioned.

No I don't think Randall worked from a zone. But I'm pretty sure he didn't work from home most of the time either. He probably had many face to face interactions that wouldn't be proper to conduct with a Web conference call.
I know people prefer working from home but communication and knowledge sharing isn't as effective.

Randall didn't become CEO by "collaborating" in a "zone". Neither did any of the Officers. They each make tens of millions of dollars per year.

That should tell you everything you need to know about collaboration zones.

It appears the OP is talking about getting severance, everyone gets a pension, 401k or both if they have worked for years.

It’s no different than the executives get when they leave except the difference in the amount. Some are golden and company has now figured out a way to bypass severance for most employees by rebadging

I agree, companies have this thing called technology which allows the office space to be nearly anywhere. I thought AT&T was trying to be environmentally responsible. Most employees driving everyday is adding congestion & pollution unnecessarily.

Some positions need to collaborate & working from a central location is more efficient.

My opinion is, I’m definitely less effective due to the long drive time, distracting crowded office environment along with the office politics. So, there is a reason some people are “whiners”. Others (social butterflies) thrive in a crowded social environment.

My position doesn’t require collaboration with the people I’m zoned with, my peers are in other cities & states. This should be done on an individual basis so the company can operate at max efficiency

They’re working great. Win win for everyone! Whiners are finally quitting so my coworkers and myself no longer have to hear their incessant complaints. The company saves money. The whiner goes on to greener pasteurize.

Everybody wins!
