Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Red October- almost here

Hearing from my manager that there are some crazy reorgs coming soon for outside orgs. More manger surpluses which will result in much bigger areas of responsibilities, larger crew size & combination crews of various titles for each manager.

Reduction in different levels. This will be interesting with different work rules & skill sets

It has already happened in FL. I am a central office ET. My supervisor has almost doubled the number of ETs that he has to supervise. It is also about a 2 1/2 hr drive from one end of his territory to the next.

I pray that goes well for those displaced. All large companies goes thru changes but this has become an inhumane and hostile work environment. I know this has been a big disappointment when most have made a career here only to feel betrayal.

Keep your heads up for all the professionalism, loyalty and dedication you have displayed. Your families should be proud of you. We can only control our attitudes & future.

In the end there is a higher power that we are accountable too. And on that day, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord. We will each be judged according to our works

Most of the early changes are going to happen at L2 and up. It will eventually affect craft & L1. Of course subject to change hourly, daily, weekly

Contracting out, short term - a way not to show up on on the government radar in the jobs & lay-off reports. Company benefits: Not paying severance, MR75, benefits, lower pay per task & someone else’s HR has to handle. Also, doesn’t have to explain where the job creation went after, the huge corporate tax cuts in the billions.

Long term - this has not worked well for the company in the past. As time goes by you lose experience, innovation, quality, loyalty, prioritization, & a disconnect from the company mission.

Employee either accepts the move or quits & loses any hopes of a little (month) severance. On the positive it’s gives the employee time to dust off resume & job search while still employed & training their replacement,

Its because of a couple of the deadly sins.

  1. Pride
  2. Greed

The company used to be family friendly with high standards and common decency, caring for employees and customers alike...now they are just chasing their own tail having lost their moral compass.

Didn’t think it would be this soon but Stankey is going to push the envelope. Always has in every position he has filled. He now has the authority to make changes across the entire company and probably will. A lot of top level executives better stock up on diapers. As he did with TW a lot of silos will come down. Still too much infighting or turf battles between departments, organizations and even regions. A lot of those people will be gone in the next 6 months.

Hopefully those displaced can find somewhere to land. Poor morale with the constant barrage of rumors, announcements and the apparent lack of caring by upper management.

But we’ve heard for how long, “ change/challenges are good” I’m all for progress but there is something to be said about slow & steady. Greed & ego has seemed to infiltrate our company. How much is enough?

We’ve became so large that it’s hard to move the needle. We are taking too many big risk, The law of diminishing returns seems to apply.

True but don’t forget the Board that has rubber stamped all of these financial train wrecks. At what other company can you lose billions because of poor decisions & not be fired? Not just once but we’ve doubled down.

When are the major stock holders going to act before tens & possibly 100 thousand people’s lives are ruined? Can someone say Enron, Worldcom

Great replies, sad that upper management has become stuck in their own echo chamber. They no longer can see the forest because of the trees.

Back before Randy & company, we pulled the wagon as a team toward a common goal. Everyone shared in the profits as a team. The customer was always right and first before we became Top down, micromanaged, big data metric analyzed.

The results are very telling. It’s now every person for themselves ie.. the Lion scenario, I don’t need to be fast, just out run you. It’s created a very hostile & toxic work environment . Used to enjoy coming to work & felt like I was making a difference. Everyone used to be part of the process improvement & it was encouraged no matter your “level”.

Hope we get some new leadership that can turn our ship around before we become the next Titanic.

Agree, been told to hurry and get off an install or repair many times because a metric (HPC) was going in the red. A second or 3rd level is watching because it affects their bonus

Even though the service wasn’t complete because of bad plant that isn’t being maintained. The customer still has some questions they need answered but we hurry and don’t assist as needed.

Result - we redispatch again, customer unhappy,I get a repeat and company gets a black eye

Managers wonder why they are getting surplussed. Cause & Effect

I’m all for Safety but maybe they will have less time to harass us on silly made up local safety policies.

  1. Wearing The Magic Safety Vest all the time
  2. Beeping horn while backing, even though vehicle has backup buzzer
  3. All 4 chocks out while working, two was safe for the last 100 plus years
  4. Discuss why the new distracting beeper inside of the cab has gone off too many times this month, even though I’ve never had an accident. Get a clue, people pull out in front of us all the time, it’s called accident avoidance.

Etc......

Hopefully they can actually do something meaningful about our real challenges with our customer service, software tools & contacting support etc..

Less conference calls to talk about same topics but never have a resolution or metrics to make bonuses. When we went away from caring about the customer and have individual bonuses at risk has driven bad and unethical behavior, customers be d$mmed!
