ATO town hall- HR response

A very good question was asked during the latest town hall.

“With low unemployment and companies that pay more what is the plan for employee retention ?”

The HR response was laughable or insulting.
“The number one reason employees stay with a job is because they have a PURPOSE.”

Hey leadership the “purpose “ of a job is to make money to support ourselves and our family!

I absolutely hate when we are talked to like children rather than addressing our concerns.

I’m sure when McElfresh was offered the promotion he said “oh keep that pay raise I’m just happy to have a purpose!”

This is suppose to be an hard nose engineering company, everything base on measurement, metrics, all day and all night long. Things aren't measured won't get done. All the sudden, "Purpose" is most important? Wow, where is the metric on Purpose?

We do studies every few years to make sure we are inline with industry compensation. Guess what, competitors are paying more than inline, just as the person who asked the question at the meeting. If you were looking for a job, better yet a career, will you settle for inline average compensation? Nope, you won't.

Unfortunately a large majority of folks outsourced from IT prioritized AT&T over family for years and I can attest to the years of working many late nights, typical 10 hour days without lunch and travel for many years only for many to be outsourced or let go prior to MR75....I think these folks will have a real attitude adjustment now and a new purpose! This is just the reality unfortunately and a product of the environment.....

hr is right, it all depends on one's use of the word 'purpose.'

we have a purpose, as in we are allowed to work here as long as the bean counters see that we can serve as a purpose - not to be confused as to we work here because our purpose is to have dreams and a career.

  • yug , i am a millenial and ive had 7yrs with this company already and im looking for another job next year. No bashing the company, just not suitable with my goals. No fresh ideas from the leadership esp McRotten and now Stankey being in charged of a media company with zero media skills.

I had a purpose.
My purpose was to make as much $$$ as I could.
Not to collaborate, socialize, join clubs, critique my boss, be a politician, a lawyer, a salesman.
I tried to run them out of $$$ doing a good job. Outside tech.
Retired at 56.
Reciprocate the level of care and loyalty they show you.

@111GBa6H-ejv - Who in the right mind prioritize AT&T over family? Sounds like McRotten to me.

I remember this first level manager in Charlotte that was so proud to work for AT&T. He would brag to his slaves about how he missed his daughters high school graduation to come to work. What a loser

The Purpose is to have a career, which means moving up along with a salary increase. Maybe HR meant having to do meaningful work which seems to be the new term.

Only as good when you have good people around you... remove the SMEs for temp cost savings and become a loser. Should be innovative and growing if orchestrating properly a top not sacking.

The people who want to have “a purpose” are the Millenials and Gen z. I think those are the people they want to attract and maybe keep. Not us older folks.

During the integration of the SBC dictatorship, we had several district managers tell is that we should feel lucky to have our jobs because there were thousands lined up out on the street to take our jobs. Never once were they able to say which street exactly those people were waiting on... there is no retention plan. Randy has always felt excluding top brass, the entire company can be run with zero employees and all contractors.

Why would anyone think they want to retain folks? Are you still not getting what is going on here?

Great post! The real answer is they do not want to retain employees. They want you to feel lucky you have a job.

Senior management is so smug they think they know better than their customers, employees, government, the movie industry, the dtv people, and just about everyone else in the world. The first sign of stupidity is that you think you know more than anybody else in the world.
