In short - they are offering Lump Sum Pay outs to people that are vested, but not working for the company any more? Interesting.....

Excerpt:

“AT&T Inc., Dallas, and Warner Media LLC, New York, opened lump-sum offer windows for 59,000 former employees who are participants in the companies' U.S. defined benefit plans..... The window, which opened Wednesday and closes Oct. 2, provides vested former employees who have yet to retire the opportunity to receive an early pension distribution in the form of a lump sum, Mr. Richter said.... The offer was sent to about 47,000 participants in the AT&T Pension Benefit Plan and about 12,000 participants in the Warner Media LLC Pension Plan. AT&T purchased the former Time Warner Inc. in 2018....”

@zer+10zQyaVk - T has a history of offering a bad deal and follows that up with a worse one. Are you sure the hammer isn't going to drop on the people that stick it out?

There was a time when everybody was running from Warner Bros. stock, because of the AOL merger fiasco. How the tide is turned in the record business. Fingers crossed for those who didn't cash out.

T does not want to pay to manage any more people in the pension plan. I had 22 years & was let go in 2004. My financial guy can't match what the monthly payment T will give me at 65 so I'm keeping it in.

This has been happening for years. My wife left a subsidiary in 1992, and had a small annuity due at 65. We were offered a lump a few years ago. We took it and rolled it into a Vanguard IRA.

it's also dependent on the life expectancy tables published by the irs ( or someone ) each november, so the older you get the cheaper the lump sum.

ebq here. Forgot to say, I eventually expect buyout offers to those already receiving monthly payments. They haven't managed to inflate away the value of the payments so far.

I see this a bit differently. Interest rates are declining world wide, and the amount of debt with a negative interest rate is skyrocketing. So, pension funds have to put their money in riskier investments to stay afloat. I'm hearing in Europe, that central banks have told pension funds they can't hold (0%) cash by rule, they must invest, and so they're buying negative interest rate sovereign debt. The central banks, ECB, Bank of Japan, and Federal Reserve is creating a pension crisis with their manipulation of interest rates.

An European article. The U.S. is awash with European money chasing yield. But, that brings on currency exchange risk.

Seeing how t likes to screw people I’m thinking taking the offer is a bad deal for myself since that is what they want me to do

This offer for those in the plan who do not have the cash option, only annuity. Includes those who retired without 30 years or 65 years old and can't draw pension until they are 65. This would give them the option to take a lump sum payment, roll it to another tax deferred plan or IRA, or take the cash and pay the taxes. Getting these people out of the plan saves lots of money in managing those accounts. Smart move on part of the company.
