Getting RIF'd ? Get Copies of Everything NOW

Once you get riffed you will NOT have access to anything including e-directory. Make copies of paystubs, Performance reviews/objectives (for resumes) VZ employee help phone numbers and W2s NOW....Once you leave these automated systems will ask you for your VZ Id and you will not have an active one and there is NO LIVE person to call ....You will be screwed when you need something.....today I tried to call payroll and it asked for my userid (WTF) vs my name and SSN

I always kept copies of my performance reviews and other pertinent information, so I don’t know if this is true. Here’s my advice: consult a lawyer before you sign your severance agreement. VZ is breaking a lot of employment laws in the RIFs. Don’t let them get away with it.

In my case, they cut my duties in half a few weeks before I was RIF’d. Then, they used the old trick of claiming that they were eliminating my job because they were rolling it up into a job with expanded duties. It turned out that those “expanded duties” where the duties that had been taken from me a few weeks before and that I had been doing for years with solid reviews.

Generally speaking, a company can’t lay someone off without cause and immediately hire a new person for the position. One exception is if the person’s job duties are being rolled into a larger job and the company can establish that the person isn’t qualified to do the expanded duties. Basically, VZ “faked” a new job with expanded duties to give my job to a younger minority coming into the company through an acquisition. Because I had copies of my reviews and other things showing that I could do the “new job with expanded duties,” I was able to triple my severance with the help of a good employment attorney.

This leadership is filled with dirt bags. Don’t let them get away with their garbage. Take them for everything you can.

Trust me, the next riffs will be a tidal wave, with no time to prepare. Listen to the advise on this posting, what used to take place, will change, it will be like got to go, got to go, out the door with you.

@6shr That has not been my experience. It has usually been a quick turn over of duties leaving the RIF'd employee time to look internally or move on.

Do not forget the exit interview, always be polite, and respectful, no matter how you truly feel.

You do not want your severance delayed.

It is all about HR checking all of the boxes.

Remember that after your riff notice, that you have 30 days to find another position within VZ.....be prepared for them to work you to death, trying to download you of all the information you have learned over the years, to the point of exhaustion, so you do not have the time to find another opportunity within the company, seen this happen too many times in the past.

Also, do not forget to have copies of your job description, work samples, and any performance reviews.

Remember to wipe your pc hard drive of everything but it's operating systems and the apps it came with, if you have time delete your emails.

“as they where asked to leave quickly and told to stay home until their exit day, without access to VZ network as they had to turn in their laptops.”

This is rare but I have seen it at least once

This is not rare. This happens in most jobs that involve access to sensitive information and Network Operations.

This is rare but I have seen it at least once. Really the only option is to be prepared everyday t have what you need to never come back. Many just got mid years so if possible take your copy when you get it so you are up to date. Don’t only keep your resume in that eweb thing keep an up to date one online like linked in or indeed at a minimum.
For me when we were riffed we had ample time to look for a job and In some cases people were looking for us and did a musical chairs where people were forced to change jobs to make room for people who were riffed because they closed our location for our group.

If ever there was a stupid post, this one is it. Your access stays the same when you are RIF joker. If you had half a pea brain you would know that the company permits RIF employees to apply to other available jobs listed for other orgs. You are given 30 days for a reason. Got sit down and play with your toes. Typical stupidity.

Remember to have a copy of the "work number" service and instructions for employment verification.
Contact them to get yourself a copy of your work history, it's a pdf file. You may need this, as your company contacts may not be there in the future. You will have access to VZ websites, after RIF, but use this time to ensure you have this onformation, read all materials given to you by HR, I stress that this is a must. I was RIFF'd previously and had to provide this information to co-workers that were not given enough time to gather information, as they where asked to leave quickly and told to stay home until their exit day, without access to VZ network as they had to turn in their laptops.
