The contract is up but no one seems to care. Neither is the union urgent about anything. Our days as techs are numbered.

This must be OP's first rodeo. OP also has no clue of negotiation tactics.
It takes a little over a year before the union presents the membership with the “negotiated” tentative agreement. During this time there will be calls for solidarity and red shirt days. After that it will be, “here you go, it’s the best we can do. Sign here.”
