I'd like to hear how outsourcing has impacted other teams. My team has been cut in half due to layoffs (we're a small group) and then almost double the amount of India team members were pulled over from other teams to "assist" us. This was a year ago and the quality of our work has gone downhill. The India coworkers can follow very specific instructions, but are unable to think outside the box or take initiative. Our bosses blame us for not managing them better (we aren't managers), even though we've gone over with them how to do this stuff time and time again. Our remaining U.S. group has had to do more work because of it. The internet tech restrictions in India have also created a whole host of new problems that no tech team knows how to fix, so the India team constantly complains about computer issues we don't know what to do about. Morale is at an all time low. I've been looking for a new job but my skillset is specific so it's been hard to find one. I used to think this was a great company to work for, but in the last few years the people at the top became greedy cheap@sses who only care about the stock price. They're too smart to put India on the phones though or they would get caught.

Tax laws allow companies to benefit from offshoring jobs. Laws are made by politicians.
But some folks don't think voting matters.
OK.
Original poster here: I agree with the comment about it being hard to understand our India team members. I feel bad saying it, but I really have trouble with it. When I ask them if they understand what I'm saying they always say yes. I know they don't always understand though because they don't do so much of what is asked of them. It's frustrating. All their written comments are brief and don't give the whole story, I think because they aren't comfortable writing in English. A year later it still is a problem.
And yes, they work on things in groups in my team too, so it is very common for 2 or 3 India team members to work on something that only 1 US team member on my team would have worked on. I don't think my management has even noticed though, because they just want stuff to get done.
but if you don't want your job to go to a shiiiiithooolllee country, get the laws changed. Vote better.
Possibly the dumbest thing I've ever read on here. And that says a lot.
Over here all new-hire candidates that we get from HR are Indians. We can only hire an American if we have a specific person already identified, and even then it is considered an "exception" and we have to justify it.
My team is about 2/3 Indians, and high employee turnover during the past year has contributed to that.
A very serious issue is English Language. There are several people on my team that I am supposed to work with every day who I cannot understand. We use Chat to communicate. Conference calls are painful, and most people just tune out.
We must work with Indian support during off hours. While we are expected to work "all nighters" as required, Indian workers are quick to leave when their work shift ends, at which time we are handed off to their next shift, which wastes a lot of time and often results in having to begin all over again if there is troubleshooting involved.
Shiiiiiiithole countries. India. Philippines, east Asia. Most of Latin and South America. That covers 75% of the globe. Who else?
Have had offshore resources in the group for years and agree with most of the original post. Need to add the following though: restricted hours and not available for stateside application teams so after lunch all the work gets shifted to the stateside people. Application teams requesting different assignment of engineers so they do not have to work with offshore. Assign one engineer a task and 4 work on the same task and record the work individually to inflate their production numbers. Double the amount of holidays, no centralized management so it’s always where is so and so today? Interesting how all of this is going to work out with location strategy and the fact offshore resources are not allowed access to regulated systems which will probably be the next fine/lawsuit.
well since they're required by law, that changes everything...guess I'll just accept my layoff and spend my severance on WFC shares...
I feel for you it's hopeless to read but keep looking having general skills and can read and write is crucial for any job.
