@ 1dyn you are correct, splitters are the way its done :) hadn't wanted to over-educate our less informed coworkers. lots of splitters here in my center ;) it never ceases to amaze me how the I&R and C&E types come on here and tell me how little I know about my own workplace.

The OP is referring to room 641A in the San Francisco network nexus and other buildings that perform similar functions across the US, not normal windowless datacenters.

And they don't route traffic through them, they beam split the optical cable so there is no impact to routing.

I can tell you, those windowless buildings are nothing but equipment to send phone and internet to the surrounding area. Only thing else you'll find in there is furniture and decor from the 60s. It's windowless for security and to protect the customer. Unless you'd be okay with some thief having access to your calls and data.
