Been reading on here lots of comments about how we need to "keep building out fiber". They are done with the build, you don't know that?

What id–ts.... Other poster is right they put fiber in areas that can’t afford it don’t want it because it was older Area easier to place with no thought process of people actually going to buy the product!
@2psz....look at all of the linemen and splicers on the surplus list and tell me who's right you or the OP....T has said it's over and anything done going forward will be small scale specific jobs. The folks who took the additional jobs for the fiber build a few years ago were told that when the build was over(2020) that about 60% of them would be surplulsed. But hey, go ahead and downvote.

They ran fiber in old neighborhoods because it’s easier and cheaper to pull lines on a pole and then they can point to the low subscriber numbers to convince the investors that FTTP isn’t worth the money. Had they done a real street by street build including newer buried plant and MDU’s where younger folks live and want higher speeds the subscriber base would be higher. Of course all this means is dumbo Randall would be proven wrong on every one of his decisisons since DTV and we can’t have that now can we?
It is my understanding that in a lot of the build out areas T didn't offer the TV service, just the HSIA & Voice. That could have been a factor in the low subscription rate, that and placing fiber in front of abandoned houses.

Typical mo–n response to fiber build. We spent billions on it. Never got higher than 17% subscriber rate. Obligation to build from the direct tv merger is fulfilled. 5g can’t penetrate walls. Once deployed though, 80% of field workers will be promoted to customer
Keep it mind that the only reason this latest fiber roll out occurred was because it was mandated by the FCC as part of buying DTV and it turns out people want the higher speeds, according to the quarter results we lost subscribers in old slow copper speeds but gained in FTTP. Funny how that works and how T is going around proud of themselves on that result when unless forced into it they wouldn’t have even bothered with anymore fiber builds.
If the stock price stays around the same they are paying out 6% on each share of stock. Not a expert on financial statements but the return on buybacks would seem to be better than what some of the business units are doing as a ROI right now. Some of those units are huge companies in their own right and takes a lot to move the needle.
In the press release for the 2Q earnings, they said they were considering repurchasing stock. So, in the competition for funding, with 5G deployment, debt pay down, fiber deployment, and repurchasing shares, it is interesting that repurchasing stock is in contention.
Fiber will only be deployed where there is a payback.
Going to be interesting to see how they manage whatever the C&E workforce is in the future with those dynamics. In the past it was basically full blast until the capital budget was depleted. Have seen Core actually transfer money to that organization to provide copper rehab work when that happened if money was available. With fiber, capacity will not be as big of a issue in a lot of places. In the large metro areas there probably won’t be a problem keeping work in the pipeline. In the smaller areas it seems like 5G will be cell site based. There won’t be self driving cars in Podunk, Wyoming.
It is interesting though that I can pull up and watch my DTV without problems on my tablet, with 2-3 bars showing on my phone at home. Obviously not HD and the content is limited. Takes a few seconds initially to download but after that don’t remember any issues.
Fiber will only be deployed where there is a payback. And that's not consumers. Business fiber build out will continue as it is requested. Of course some new buildout for highband 5G buildout.

I will say though... we are still placing facilities to new construction, fiber to the business, CRAN- in support of 5G network.... I mean it’s not like 5G/Pole top antenna runs on magic
Although the large scale builds are over we will continue placing cable every day... also have to maintain facilities in place
I think the point people are trying to make is... placing fiber everywhere in an effort to provide broadband and wireless service makes more sense than only focusing on large cities and getting into content wars with Netflix. It’s obvious DirecTV was a mistake as our compounding customer losses prove each quarter

It’s simple. Randall Stephenson was never an operations guy. He’s got no clue how to run this business because he never understood it. He’s simply an over glorified bean counter that came from the finance dept. He buys companies , because he doesn’t know how to compete. In his mind, it’s cheaper to deploy 5G than fiber. In his mind, everyone will be watching tv from 5g in their homes. Meanwhile , I haven’t been able to get more than one bar for 4g in my home but I’m supposed to believe I’ll have 5g streaming into my home ? Give me a break. They can’t even fix what we got.

They announced quite a while ago that the fiber build out to satisfy the government imposed requirements related to the DirectTV acquisition would complete in July, and that any further fiber deployment would be much more selective.

The email we just received about completing the fiber build was just a slap in the face to us. Having been on the line crew for the entire build that started a few years ago, we were no where near done with the fiber build and we primarily did the build in low income housing areas where no one can afford it and half of the homes are abandoned. Now I and many others are getting surplused because this fiber build was just as big sham by the company and was purposely designed to fail.
