Word is coming down from up high that after D4 signs all techs in the field will have to go through basic outside classes recertification. That means that all the heavy guys who cannot climb a pole will have 90 days to find a new job within the company. All the old frail who cannot pull a manhole lid the same thing. Those who cannot buck a ladder the same. It is an easy step for T to get even more techs off the payroll.

28th year in D4, 10 in line then splicing then repair.......never heard of or participated in any type of certification program. What fat guys lost in agility they make up for in knowledge. You can’t surplus everyone.
It’s single dispatch today for I&R. Install internet , clear a cable failure and then repair the hicap. Hicaps have never been fewer than there is today’. Repairing those are just another job in the pool. Heck a good uverse customer is at a couple of hundred a month. Same with directv and Cell sites are fiber and business uses the internet. Few and far between.
Lay the drop on the ground - call it a temp - make a facility report and send it to OSP.
Or just tell them to switch to Charter or Comcast.
Either way, you get paid and can go home for the day.

@rph..dang straight! Never understood I&R having a bucket truck parked in a customers yard to run a station wire for a $50/ month dial tone or DSL while a hicapper is out slinging a ladder to fix a $500/month special circuit.

Climb a pole...no problem, mid-span...sure. But all it does is accelerate people into injury. Real utility companies use bucket trucks all day for most things. It’s not 1970 anymore. We can be smarter and do it safer now. I know I know it cost $$$$$$$
Regarding a Recert, for climbing with your hooks or even doing ladders, all a tech needs to say is they don’t feel safe since it’s been so long, and the request for pole climbing/ladder refresher course. The Company is obliged to send them for refresher courses.
