Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Working from home - take up another job

I am a remote tech worker with Wells Consimer banking. My job is not difficult (mostly support) and have been a remote worker since 2010. Can i do another emote job on the side ? No one seems to care here what I do or where I am. They just check if I am online except for 2 meetings every week. I am also not far from a hub so I am safe. I could easily “keep an eye” on my wells fargo laptop while checking another one for my new job.

YOU need to read the d*mn policy. Any extra time you have during paid hours should be used to work of WF projects. Period. FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO AT WF. HELP OTHER TEAMS or SEEK OUT SPECIAL PROJECTS.

To use your "extra WF time" working for other organizations (industry conflict or not) is STEALING. And that would make you no better than other crooks at WF. Ever heard of double dipping? Geez. Does character exist anymore?

Do the right thing even when no one is looking.

Read the damn policy. you can have outside employment so long as it does not directly compete with WF, cause an actual or potential conflict of interest, or negatively impact your job at WF.

Make sure your paycheck from job #2 isn’t deposited into a WF account. That way your boss or Hr can’t look at your personal checking account. After that, they have no legal basis to ask you for paystubs, tax returns, etc. The only way you can get caught is if someone sees you working at the other job and reports it to your manager. Just depends how visible job #2 really is.

Unless you'll be getting money under the table in 2nd role (no paper trail), you can easily get caught.

Foolish to think WF won't find out.

I think it could be hard to dance on the pole while answering emails

This is risky, but if you try this, be very careful about posting your resume, and you should assume HR departments talk to each other.

I’d go for it. The likelihood of WF finding out is very slim. Just don’t post anything like on Facebook, LinkedIn etc where a WF manager could see you have a second gig.

LOL at "following the rules", "major violation", "read the handbook" - for the peasants and serfs only right?

You said "on the side", which means NOT overlapping the two jobs..

Yet everything else you said indicates otherwise. You said you'd keep an eye on your WF laptop while working on other role, which sounds like you'd be overlapping hours. That is clearly NOT allowed.

Only if you worked the other job (non-conflicting) outside your WF work hours would it be permissible.

Think twice. I hope you get paid a lot in the new role and it has great benefits, because you're one step from justifiable termination from WF. The paper trail of paychecks for that role, etc. will prove WF's case.

Just don't be surprised if you are fired. WF execs/mgrs are allowed to be unethical, but I assure you that other empkoyees are not.

WF is looking for ways to fire people for cause (saves them $$ – no payout). I wouldn't give them a reason.

I know 3 people who were terminated for minor team member policy violations. They were stunned and could not collect unemployment. It sent shockwaves through our division. Big Brother is watching, whether you're aware of it or not.

What you're proposing is a major violation (read the handbook) – it's considered stealing if you're getting paid and not working. Acceptable risk? You decide.

The job I was considering is not in the finance industry but in media to write on new technologies. Looks like I was overthinking that as a conflict of interest.

A major ethical violation? Yeah... because everyone working at Wells Fargo should worry about treating the company ethically.

I'm sure that ethical loyalty will be reciprocated by management. OR, they will stab in you in the back in less than a heartbreak. Consider your risks and do whats best for you, only you can look out yourself, trust me, no one in management is looking at for your best interests they are looking out for theirs.

Are you exempt? If you're being paid a salary for a full work week (40+ hrs.), any other job outside WF would be a conflict of interest.

I hope I'm misunderstanding your post. If not, it sounds like you're considering a major ethical violation.

I know many who work from home and have a crushing workload with no relief in sight. I'd keep your light load to yourself.

You can always have a second job as long as it’s not a conflict of interest. Like another bank etc.
