Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Response

Working as a CP manager didn’t really bother me at all other than the 12+ hour a day compliance. I have 20 years experience with the company in multiple departments and a skill set that exceeds that of most any union worker so I didn’t find the work all that challenging if at all. It was actually a nice break from the daily grind of non-stop compliance reporting, employee & work scheduling, E-Mail fire drills and of course, chasing slacker union people around all day trying to keep them productive. Don’t kid yourself. We were able to hold the line just fine.

Reason why you got so much is you didn’t have to deal with the micro managers they we have to deal with!

The strike, from the outside looking in, sounds like just another orchestrated dance of the union with management. Been there, done it a couple of times on CP duty. It's kind of dumb, ain't it?

The only difference in working conditions is that we had subhuman filth threatening and spitting on our cars as we pulled in, telling us they were going to k–l our families for being "scabs" even though we weren't. I'm actually surprised that we were able to clear all the tickets with that kind of threatening behavior. Is that what they teach at the union hall?

If you are management and were filling in for an assignment, just remember T was able to do without you for a few days on the management side just as easily as they can do without you when the letters come out.

So many "Trolls" in this thread. And all of them managers. Go figure.

@nou not sure how you managed to knock out 3 fiber installs in a day unless it was existing or mdu. Don't for one minute think you could even handle a full blown fiber install. Talking to several managers which used to be techs were only completing 1 fiber install a day and also had helpers with them. The people they sent in the field had no clue what they were doing and iefs managers were trying to get them to ride with prem techs to help them with their completions.

We won, all techs will receive 8 hours pay for 8/26 and 8/27, 8 hours pay for 8/28 plus overtime. The company cannot harass union members or will face severe fines. We await a fair contract. Managers will continue to be fired randomly. Take it easy.

Yes I was called out during strike as well and had a similar experience. Saturday was slow and was only able to get in 1 3600 pr cut cable repair and 2 t1 line installs but by Tuesday was putting in 3 dtv a day, 2 t1, multiple cut cable repairs, wired a 500 unit mdu with ifw and still had time to take a 2 hour lunch.

For us Mgmt, the strike was a nice change of pace, seeing a different side of the business. But I think those posting about how effective they were are forgetting how daily life is for a tech. We had perfect weather and no metrics to meet. Tickets were cherry-picked. Normally, if we have a doctors appt, need to pick up kids from school early, or want to meet a friend for dinner, we just leave and finish our work later that evening. Techs don’t have perfect weather every day. And they definitely can’t just leave to run an errand between conference calls! Please be considerate of their issues.

I must admit it was nice change of pace from my daily role as an Ato Coach, Saturday it was rough but by Monday I was knocking out 3 fiber Internet installs and a repair a day

Considering no installs were being completed not sure how it’s an apples to apples comparison.

Except we were working under the same rules and with the same systems as you. How were we able to clear the backlog that built up over the previous weeks?

and any of the current craft folks could work circles around yoy and the other managwrs that think these jobs are so simple and easy. here is a thought let's level the playing field and then see how the craft folks and you self absorbed, self important managers do. remove all of the metrics and measurements that hinder craft workers from doing their jobs and then let's see how you compare.

Not downplaying the importance of these jobs (they are important), but during my deployment we cleared a backlog of tickets and got a lot of kudos from customers. In fact our garage had 1/2 the staff and got twice as much done as usual, so much that the supervisor was calling other garages to see if we could help...but they too were all way ahead of schedule. Ouch.

Wow 12+ hrs a day you’re a go getter. I wish I could be a genius like you work, 60 and paid for 40. That’s such a selfless act of kindness, must make you indispensable, sign me up, so sick of the union and being paid for hrs worked.

The company is all ready looking at the number of tickets and call prossing in the center's staffed by CP management. Call pickup times were cut in half. Tickets pickup times cut down as well.

Upper management impressed at the volume of work preform by less people. I think the union just shot there self in the foot.

It’s unfortunate some are using this as a way to downplay the role and efforts of the union folks. As someone who is mgmt and has had to fill in many years ago and take the training for each contract period I always enjoyed this time purely for the fact that it gave me s different view and perspective of all of the great work our techs do out in the field. The risks, dealing with customers, the elements and everything they have to deal with. For us office folks we don’t have those risks or work environment challenges. Thank you to all the techs and other union folks for what you do and deal with on a regular basis

So, the load should be at zero when we get back then. You sound like you could be my manager, always talking about he was the greatest tech that ever lived. Only problem is that he is only a legend in his own mind. He literally can not answer any question posed to him or help with any problem you present to him. I’m sure there are managers who faired just fine these past few days, but my 34 years experience tells me that the ones that run their mouth the most are trying to mask their incompetence.

Funny, 3 days and these folks think they have seen all that gets done and have mastered the role they filled in for. I am non bargained ATO with a CP assignment but was not deployed.
