Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Can managers form a union ?

Many of us managers at att aren’t even really managers. We don’t have personnel assigned to us. I’m a field engineer. I do tech work. Yet I have a management title simply so the company doesn’t have to pay me overtime and can make me fill in when there’s a strike. It’s b.s. Managers like me get screwed over big time.

If your duties are break/fix type tech work and you aren't paid OT, probably a violation of flsa (fair labor standards act). ATT is very familiar with flsa violations. They've been sued over it a few times. A few years ago, they were changing mgmt positions to non-exempt in waves. Maybe they missed your position or didn't get to it yet

Troll post... No managers call themselves Tech Managers... No self-respecting manager would say
"Many of us managers at att aren’t even really managers. We don’t have personnel assigned to us. I’m a field engineer. I do tech work" - Silly Wire Tech... Keep dreaming and maybe you can be a Core Tech one day...

It’s a free country, form a union if you want. You will be fired though. Have a good day.

You're either an id–t or a troll poser if you want to unionize as an engineer. Or possibly you're probably worried about getting laid off because your not getting your work done and your the bottom of the barrel.

This has to be a troll because all engineers in the company are Non-Exempt and get paid OT dumb–s!!! TROLL!!!!!!!!!

No, No, and No...Tech Managers do not approve timecards, can't write folks up or anything like that as we do not supervise anyone......

No.... management is exempt. You attempt to unionize and you will get fired.

Yes you could join a union and become a bargaining unit, however at that time you lose all the freedoms you now have. No being late, dr appt requires time off, you will clock in and out.even at lunch.and forget all the travel perks. You prolly wouldn’t gain much, but more headaches.

Those of you who are 'managers in name only' do have the legal right to unionize and engage in collective bargaining. Speak to an attorney and get in contact with a union representative,

You would need to hold a vote in your department. If a simple majority of members vote yes to join a union, your department is unionized!

Teaming up with the CWA would probably be the convenient route, but many members are unhappy with their performance in negotiating with the company, so possibly look at other alternatives.

Best of luck!

I cringe at the thought of being in a union. I’ve actually earned KCA’s. In a union, that money would be dispersed among others. Screw that

@10KzAJn8-xyc,

Very helpful, thanks. Yes there are many of
us “managers” at the company that are not really managers at all; ie not in a supervisory role. It’s just a way for the company to get us to work 70 hour work weeks with no OT and NO RIGHTS

Your title is irrelevant. Do you approve timecards, timeoff requests, or have the power to "write somebody up"? If yes to any of these then no, you can't organize.

It has nothing to do whether you are exempt or not exempt since you can be exempt without supervisor duties based off other criteria. Also having the title of “manager” given to you by the company doesn’t eliminate rights to organize.

Employees not protected by NLRA are supervisors (with limited exceptions) or are part of disciplinary decisions and receive confidential personnel information. If your job is a management role but not a supervisor role and not dealing with discipline or HR then you may be eligible to organize.

Ask a labor attorney for more information.

Hope that helps!
