I recall Ralph refused to move to Dallas, he was a bright star within and outside AT&T, made Johns look tarnished. Ego plays a big role in boardrooms (move from San Antonio to Dallas was to get away from the shadows of Whitaker). There are many reasons why he left.

But at this moment in company's history ... we need someone who is not a small bit player. Somebody with a proven stature, someone who can be courageous and rise above board room politics.

Adtran has a solution to greatly increase bandwidth using the existing infrastructure. Imagine. Being able to satisfy and retain the existing DSL customer base with upgrades and at the same time developing other technologies such as GPON and gaining even more customers.
