Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why do we even need layoffs?

This place is a revolving door as it is. I can't even keep track of people who are leaving and people who are replacing them. Why not simply stop hiring replacements?

AT&T in most cases provided a good living for all, union and management. Benefits were good, still are, even though we contribute to the cost. Like many companies, ATT is following what they are doing, good or bad. There are many companies out there that provide free benefits, help with child day care and provide free breakfast and lunch. It's the greed of upper management that is costing the employees of ATT. ATT can still be a great company, the BOD's need to set the course and control the leadership team. Many large companies have the same issue, pay the big wigs and let the crumbs fall to the little guys. All this greed is ruining the future of our kids and their kids.

I always wondered that myself. Laying off people but at the same time hiring new people where the person that just left could do the work. Seems like a waste of energy.

From the management side (non-Union) many of us would retire, perhaps take a Severance pkg if it was offered

this is the true problem. you refuse to leave. you are old, have very little skills, getting a free paycheck, and you just don't give a flip. you are so jaded, you demand someone pay you to leave. you're time is coming, hopefully sooner than later. you will decree age discrimination. yet you refuse to look around and see the army of old folks, just like you. you did this to yourself. if anything, you should have been gone a long time ago. it might have prodded you to get some skills and make yourself marketable (i.e. you would have had to go find another job).

“AT&T wants to lay techs off then re-hire them for less pay.” This is not exactly a new concept over the decades. From the management side (non-Union) many of us would retire, perhaps take a Severance pkg if it was offered, or both then retire......after 6-12 month retirement would become untenable or perhaps T would give some of us a call and say “hey, we need your expertise. Want to return as a contractor?”

This was a time when you felt that T had an “open door” attitude, they knew your value, were sorry to see you go and just as happy to welcome you back.....now the door opens just one way!

Got people who are experts in the old Legacy world (which is declining) invested in this company. They can build a DEG cabinet from the ground up. However not many of them would be functional in the SDN world.

I thought the strike was specifically about ULP, not the contract.

If you are referring to the strike then no, it’s not about pay grade. It’s about job security. Health insurance costs too but mostly about job security. At&t wants to lay techs off and then re-hire them for less pay under a different title under the guise of remaining competitive. Yet they seem ok with increasing their own yearly pay and compensation. Randall and his cronies are simply crooks in a tailored suit.

There are some areas in att where people never leave, ever. There are different reasons some att employees won't be able to find another job with comparable compensation. Some aren't going to quit until they leave with a severance, are fired, or outsourced.

I know it's all about pay grade - but can't there be a compromise?
