Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

How long do you plan to stay at AT&T?

I figure this is a valid question. Aside from the old-timers that are awaiting their pensions, I believe a lot of folks are disappointed with the way AT&T conducts business and with the state that the company is in. In that light I ask how long do you plan to stay at this company, given that you survive the layoffs. Will you stay at AT&T or will you try to get out on your own terms ASAP?

Retiring soon after the new contract in April 2021 for District 6. I'll retire before that if an Involuntary Severance Package is offered. Either way.......I can't fukking wait.

I've been with T for several years and can't see myself retiring here. I was hired after pensions were culled and while my 401k is set up decently, I am miserable in my current role.

L2 Manager, 6 years with company, late 30s. Leaving in the next few months. I don’t see any career growth options despite all the great things I’ve done. Just not worth it any more. Leaving while I still have some hair. Time to get off the hamster wheel. Some of you have good jobs, some are in a dead end place. I’m in a dead end place with no way out. Time to go.

Planned to be gone by December 2021. May be as soon as Sept. 29 due to surplus.

L2 Manager with 20+ years and in my 40’s, no plans on leaving. I enjoy my job and people I work with. Pay is good, benefits aren’t bad and we get plenty of time off.

If I got caught up in surplus I’ll take my severance, 401k, little pension and get another job but I’m not running from a steady career I actually enjoy.

When I started working at SCB, I envied fellow workers with seniority saying one day I’ll be glad to be in your shoes...have seniority, pension, vacation, work 30 years-yeah! Now some of you are so selfish thinking older employees owe you something! Stop it! Some of you making $80’s+, no college degree, got insurance, on cell phones, internet, taking long breaks...stop it and be thankful your job didn’t go offshore! Be thankful the company offers training, raises, vacation, benefits. Again, be thankful and stop hating on older employees.

About a year. Long enough for my youngest to graduate and have my home paid off. At that point I plan to work because I want to not because I have to. A few years ago I took a lateral move to be in a position that is in demand no matter the company or industry. Life is too short to be concerned every 3 months that you are on the list. I intend to leave the company on my terms instead of riding the decline.

Like an earlier poster said, the fight is between the workers and Dallas, not management vs union. Trust me, management folks are just as unhappy and disgruntled as craft. Maybe more if we get deployed. It has been made very clear that if you don't deploy, you are fired. We have no recourse and the laws don't protect us in most cases. Most of us just can't afford that right now.

L2 manager, 25 years of service and just turned 50. I have good job prospects but with one in college and the next one right behind, I can't just walk away from the severance. I'd be happy to volunteer for an MVO at this point. But it doesn't seem there is going to be another one.

@pvy “Most are just collecting a paycheck as they look for better opportunities elsewhere.”

Stick around and take advantage of any tuition reimbursement if your region offers it. Then cut and run if you find something paying better.

Old timers may have lucrative reasons to stay, but for us Prem Techs there is no good reason to stick around. Most are just collecting a paycheck as they look for better opportunities elsewhere.

37 years and doing just enough to get by. Waiting on that big severance check. The company wants to get rid of doing things by seniority. Ain’t gonna happen!

@qlf “Yes, there are craft positions out there that are not going away. But you may have to move.“

And that’s the problem. A lot of people aren’t willing to move with their job anymore even when the company pays for the move and gives you a “moving bonus” to get settled in.

I’ve moved twice for the company so far. We took it as an opportunity to meet new people and see another part of the country. I still keep in touch with family and friends as well as doing annual trips to visit.

I’m going to stick around until rule of 75 and take the first buyout offered.

I’m 46 years old and a tech . I’m riding out At&t as long as I can. Why should I quit and get nothing when I can get about a years salary if surplussed. Then I can take that year to find another job. Besides , this company can’t make me miserable. They don’t get inside my head. I get in theirs.

I am craft. 20 years. I will still be here after Randall is gone. I am lucky. But luck is where preparation meets opportunity. Keep your resume up to date with your experience and accomplishments. It was the tie breaker that got me a craft position over less qualified with more seniority. After I satisfy time in title in this position I will be looking for a legacy t position that is protected. Yes, there are craft positions out there that are not going away. But you may have to move.

Lots of folks w degrees, youth, and options that would roll on out. Lots of folks in their 40's with 20+ years are in the came too far to jump off the train mode will be there till they turn the lights off whether that be 10 years, 10 days, or 10 hours from now.

L2 mgr here, with 15 yrs total. Had a CP19 assignment and rcvd deployment notice. Turned in my resignation instead. I know a lot of craft folks are former military. So am I. Don’t agree with all of the union speak, but this fight is between all working folks vs. the id–t club of Randy & the Johns. I’m respecting the picket line because I respect those who wore a uniform.
