Work Life Balance at Verizon

What do you guys think about the work life balance at Verizon ?
I work in IT and have two kids.. and on the brink of a break down...
My boss obviously does not care nor does the Shank's party of losers in 2.0. Some one needs to fix this management... It is crazy..

“Use your vacation time”
I stopped using it for a while because it just meant more work. Work late before. Work late after. Then most time get stuck working on vacation so really all you did is work more. Taking no time off so there wasn’t any cramming ended up being more relaxing even when I ended up working long hours.

I didn't realize how bad it was until I left. It just becomes normal to never be off. I was in the east, but my customers had locations out west and overseas so I was expected to always be available to them during their business hours. Then there was the "Hey boss just a reminder that I'll be out on vacation next week.." "Ok, but remember I need you to prepare some talking points and be on that call with the customer on Tuesday and then on our VP call to review on Wednesday. Oh and I'll want to send you that QBR deck next week for review since the Account Manager wants to see it by Friday. Keep an eye on your email as there will need to be various reviews and edits needed. Also please make sure I have a way to call you with questions. Oh and I know you're swamped trying to get ready to leave but don't forget that webinar on Embracing Change you're enrolled in for half day Friday..." Blah blah blah. Such nonsense. It's just not healthy and in hindsight now...hardly worth it.

Work Life Balance is not only an issue in IT. The tax department is not any better.

Correct on all your points. And aside from the lack of ability and leadership there is the corruption. People see the links with shank and baby brother vg with the vendors. And the new VPs are equally bad smoozing and skimming from the top with lavish trips, meals and events . Look at all the people who hang with sap .... look at the money we spend. Dig in the corruption is there if you want it .

I’m in IT and haven’t taken a vacation without my laptop in over 20 years. Such is this line of work.

I'd recommend getting out. Proving you're capable in IT only results in more work getting piled on your plate in a quantity vs quality aspect and there's a clear favoritism game going on as under performers keep getting moved up. Culture and atmosphere are highly toxic. Lots of over promising without considering reality to make business happy and in turn business is always let down, angry, and expects us to continue to keep saying yes.

I left but still browse this board every now and then in hopes of reading about a top brass change or scandle with IT leadership. There's definitely something very questionable and boarderline illegal going on in some of the IT organizations.

My recommendation is do training, interview around and do your 40 hours in that order and take an offer you feel comfortable with when it comes along.

I held out hope for change for too long and wouldn't recommend waiting for the organization to change. Make the change you want happen yourself.

You go in, do what you can in 40 hours and go home. Occasional overtime is one thing, but it's abuse to expect salaried employees to work enormous hours continuously. You can refuse. Will you end up on a RIF list? Maybe, maybe not. But isn't your health and sanity worth saying No More?

Yes that is usually the case in IT. There are quite a few people who seem to sail along without much responsibility. Those people dont have a problem
