Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Are the older employees going to be cut eventually, before they reach their pension?

I don’t think that any sane person can argue the age discrimination that is happening. Older folks are a target, no doubt. But to what extent are they planning to go? Can we witness a situation where all the older employees could be cut before they reach their pension? How much more of age discrimination is the law going to tolerate? Can they go all the way?

The employees that are not bargained for will be fired no matter what age you are.

Not everyone is bargained for Skippy.

@ngp
"Every dollar in the pension plan belongs to a participant. " This is 100% correct. I don't understand the OP and many others that think T can somehow get out of their pension obligation for someone that is vested in the plan. They cannot. That said, it is true that some folks will get hosed if they are let go before reaching MR75 (as it seems many here were) IF their pension is one of the ones that gets "bumps" at significant milestones. Not all of the pensions are like that however...like mine for instance. I will hit MR75 this month and there is no bump in my pension amount. I honestly wish I could "gift" my MR 75 status to someone it will actually help. I am on my spouses medical as T's management high deductible plans became less and less affordable over the last 10 years. I'd do better on the open market with Cricket, TMobile, or Xfinity on my "discounted" wireless plan. The DirecTV for $10 is nice but all of this stuff goes up as a retiree benefit. (I actually modeled the health care costs as a retiree on One Stop– WOW. Like $1100 a month). I'd do better with ACA. Again, depending on your status and/ or legacy company you may or may not have better retiree benefits. Mine just pretty much stink, to where hitting MR 75 is pretty much meaningless.

  • ngo wrote “surplusing people does not save any pension dollars “. If company surplus 25 year employee where pension cost is highest and contract job out at way cheaper with no pension how is this not a savings?

Every dollar in the pension plan belongs to a participant. Surplusing people does not save any pension dollars. Those under 65 and or less than 30 years NCS and not on cash balance plan may have to wait until the reach 65 to draw. Not sure if there are any unvested folks left in the plan.

Anyone who thinks AT&T isn't looking at future pension obligations as a way to pay down debt is fooling themself. This the first cell on the "hit" spreadsheet.

yeah if you want to put up the shenanigans before you meet the mr75 and if you think it is worth staying there putting up with the shenanigans you might make it. me - life is too short. what k–ls me is the megalomaniacs who think they are safe or can "hold their own" lol.

I don't know for sure what upper management is thinking but I'm not convinced they are all targeting older workers. At&t has a very high proportion of older workers. There has also been a lot of surplus activity over the past few years. They would have to make special exceptions to not include older workers in the surplus some of the time.
I'm not a fan of at&t management and how they treat their employees but I'm not sure they are guilty of this offense. They do have to produce a report with ages when they do a surplus.

Just the normal c-appy way AT&T treats their employees to give their life to the company !!! WTF

I made MR75 a couple years back. But I will tell you it was 2.5 years of never ending stress being in the surplus list and waiting to be notified a few weeks after the "you are in an affected work group" call. Hang in there brothers, bargained or non-bargained we're just working to carve out a better life for our families.

Now I understand why the company is trying to get rid of "seniority rules" for union represented employees!!! They want to get rid of as many older workers as possible without having to give them an offer to leave.

Me too............20.5yrs at age 53. They shorted me of 50% of my possible pension. And.........not a darn thing I could do about it. Would love to see a law suit come up soon where I could join it and they nail AT&T for BILLIONS.
