Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Full circle

I was with IBM for 17 years before they sold us to AT&T in 1999. Twenty years later i was laid off from AT&T. Took my lump sum and 401K and moved them out of Fidelity. Just landed another job after four months. Most of my friends in Tech Dev are now back with IBM. I have to admit this one caught me off guard. T is like the keystone kops now.

@2vbn, you make a fair point but I believe most thoughts of outsourcing were thought of as outside the country....no one on this board conceived of their next home being IBM. Having said that, the rules have definitely changed.

Folks on this board were talking about outsourcing a few weeks before it happened....obviously no one was listening.

@1rrl - Yeah, it was put together in a hurry. I've heard the Q2 numbers were looking really bad and they had to do something quick. We won't know the truth this week at the announcement, but a few quarters down the road we should.

As unorganized and ill-prepared as the 2 HR departments are, I got the impression this was put together in a hurry.

Their move caught a lot of people off guard and while watching this Lay-off board most everyday....the calls of "pay me to leave and I’ll go!" Or "I will give them four hours and they will pay me for eight," and on and on! Those chants got quiet in a hurry!

Say what you want but admit that we got played, better still, out played. We were playing checkers and the Boys upstairs were playing Chess. They knew what we were saying down here, don’t think for a moment they didn’t. This IBM plan was many months in the making and the secret move never leaked out....not one single word on this board or even a speculative comment.

Some are figuring about 9k gone from Tech-Dev and more to follow for what one person said would be a "Red October." That would pretty much fit a Christmas end of year departure that T is known for of late.

Best of luck everyone.
