Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

All of Tech Dev

How long before everything in Tech Dev is gone to outsourcing? Isn't that what Verizon did? The Johnnies made a mess of this company!

@5tbp, from experience I say network hard. You must have contacts you haven’t thought about in years....old bosses who can circulate for you with contacts from old bosses!

October 2016, we were given fair warning that a Surplus was coming by end of the month....mine came and I had until the end of the year and was gone. Prep yourself with the knowledge of the "worst case" possibility and know the financial impacts.....a thirty year past contact kept me in the game.

I made it back in through contacts and hard networking. Don’t be afraid, or even embarrassed, to impose on old contacts to make calls and inquiries on your behalf, it’s no time to be shy and just say, "ok, thanks for trying!" If your time is coming then start planting the seed now....make these people remember you, and should something come up, they might remember that polite but persistent job seeker....Good luck.

There is no such thing internally as a career pivot. Unless you happen to be in Dallas your safe for 4 more years career options are going to be limited, sorry to say. I've been trying for the last 3 years and because I am not in the right geolocation I got no bites on internal applications at all. Big Data/CDO is the only group I've not seen hit that hard so far.

We've even been laying off the C&E people building out the 5G network.

Where should a Tech Dev left over and not outsourced this round to IBM be looking to pivot before the Titanic sinks? Is there anywhere in the company relatively safe these days? How about Product or Labs? Any advice would be appreciated.....Resume is up to date and already circulating externally but need advice as to where to look internally as I need 4 more years, 2 kids in college...Thanks

My Manager said today in his 30 years with the company, he has never seen it so bad. Our entire group will most likely be laid off in late September. His words were "find an another place to work".

I never bothered with the nano degrees, which are worthless outside att, or the badges or even the skill pivot bs! I took the volunteer surplus and six month severance in February and immediately rolled my pension and 401 over to a private firm. Opened an interest bearing savings account with the severance. Couldn’t be happier! My advice, take the money and run before it’s gone!

@-2spj - sad but true. once again randall and company are the king pins of deception. there is no career her for tech people.

So much for nano-degrees, T-University, all those stinking badges, and skills pivoting. It was all just a diversion until the ink dried on the outsource contracts.

Keeping in mind that T wants everything nice and neat by the end of 2020, I would presume that the surviving employees of Tech Dev would be marched out sooner than later, I just don’t know where or how!

Seeing how past history shows that T enjoys showing the Christmas spirit to their loyal subjects, I’m getting ready to have my butt spirited out the door just about that time, we’ll see......then I will quietly fade into retirement "like the good old soldier I am."
