IBM outsource

So if you are retirement eligible and they announce that IBM, etc is taking over your group, then what happens with your T pension at that time ? Possible they would want you to move to IBM but not sure what pension payout options would be. Anyone ever had this happen ? thanks

See this post on IBM's board - now they are talking about cutting severance to 2 weeks:

After 365 days you will go on IBM severance package (30 days of pay).

i've always heard if your job is sold to a vendor such as IBM, they will honor the AT&T severance package if they lay you off within 1 year. After 1 year and 1 day, your severance is back to 2 weeks pay for your one year of service and they let you go after picking your brain for KT and turning your life's work over to off shore.

What @1arj has said is true. I have seen it a lot as I sat next to a lot of people who were outsourced to IBM.

I’m in the SW, thought majority of IT jobs went to IBM several years ago. I know few people that did our tech support locally were let get from T then hired by IBM doing same job in same location.

We were asked to provide our process documents some time ago. We did. Little do they know that they are over 5 years old and there is no support to keep them up. So changes have been communicated in emails over that time. So the documents are junk. I am sure they are using said junk to create their proposal.

IBM is even worse than AT&T and that's saying a lot. They'll quickly pick your brain to see if they even need you. If you have some skill that they need information about, they'll ask you to train someone overseas to do it. If you refuse, they'll write you up for insubordination and put you on an even faster dismissal track. If you even last long enough for your first review, don't count on getting a raise, they'll claim you are overpaid.

The sad part is that even if you still do same job for AT&T as an IBM contractor, they'll basically pull you onto other projects as well and even if the AT&T work doesn't get done, AT&T seems to be afraid to even force the issue on them.

As someone else also said, I have seen the same pattern over and over again.

This is all the talk these days that there will be a lot of outsourcing and assumedly IT groups will be hit...I guess this is a win-win for AT&T and IBM.....AT&T does not have to pay a surplus severance, IBM will get more funding and the employees will lose big time when IBM gains the knowledge then outsources the jobs overseas......we have seen this same process time and time again and the shelf life at IBM these days is a year or two at best......Last wave of AT&T IT folks outsourced to IBM are being let go in June, July and August......Perfect timing so they can bring in the new batch, pick their brains and then give them the boot in a year or two when IBM downsizes and outsources overseas...…unbelievable

What groups are being outsourced to IBM?

Accumulations to your pension will end the day you are outsourced. That part will be no different than had you left on your own. Simply put, if you are retirement eligible, consider yourself retired from AT&T. You can then choose when you wish to turn on any distributions, medical, etc. That's all handled though Fidelity.

As for your IBM job, don't count on that to last. They typically then outsource your job overseas within a year. Bottom line is to know how to get your retiree medical turned on so you don't get stuck with cobra payments or no medical.

If you are vested, you keep the pension benefit that you have earned up until the time that you leave AT&T; Fidelity manages the AT&T pensions, and they will tell you what your rights are, when you leave AT&T.
