Didn't get a chance to talk to him yet, but for the life of me I can't figure out why he would want to return to Verizon after everything that has happened - and after knowing full well what kind of work environment we are subjected to on daily bases.
I also don't know how he's back - why lay off somebody then rehire them?
Why not go where the money is? Maybe it's his best alternative when he ran the numbers. This isn't personal, it's a job. When you let it get personal, then you are doing it all wrong.
Why come back? Well, 1) you can take the severance and maybe pay off your mortgage or other bills.
2) you have your full medical paid for 14 months. 3) you can take your pension and 401K and invest it so that it actually makes money instead of losing money if you are over 55. 3) You will be doing a job you already know. 4) You most likely work from home. Put extra money in your pocket. Why wouldn't you come back if you didn't hate your job? We all know the personality of Verizon, it's not personal. At this point, you can only benefit from coming back. As a contractor, they don't own you, they rent you lol.
There are not many job opportunities in Basking Ridge, central New Jersey is slowly transforming into the next Detroit.
$60 is not that much if he is a senior. If he is a junior, then he would be better served by building a career elsewhere

Actually as a contractor it would be less stressful because if you don’t like the way you are treated or the work load u can walk out, what is the hourly rate as a contractor if you were a 1st level mgr?

My coworkers has been back several times after RIFs. With the money he is making as a contractor he can afford to retire 3 years earlier than he originally planned.
First off, if they left in December, they weren't laid off, they volunteered. Second, the contracting gigs are rather lucrative if benefits are not a problem for you. Maybe they only need to bridge a few years to retirement and don't have other good opportunities in the areas they are in. You can only do a 3 year stint as a contractor. I don't have to work, but I'd go back as a part timer just for putting a few extra $$ away before full retirement. Not everyone left a bad work environment. As for the advantage to the company, they are getting the knowledge and experience at a greatly reduced cost to them since much of our total compensation is in benefits.
Low self esteem and desperation is why they are back.
Never get back together with the ex after a breakup. Weaklings do that.
