Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Resigned today

Resigned today. After 18 years I could not handle it any more, it's uncertain and things got nuts with a manager that was appointed (she graduated college 5 years ago and has very limited tech/people skills). I was in IT, will move on and work for a small 30 people company. Good luck all.

Somebody asked about DXC. I believe they were part of HP and split off or were bought out by some Indian company. After IBM we had phone only support that was good but only lasted a year. But they were AT&T employees so maybe that’s why. My team now uses a vendor for most support problems and pc exchanges at end of lease. It’s a vendor we pay for other work per a contract but when one of their guys is here and we need help they take care of it for us and we pay per hour so everybody’s happy. I wouldn’t let DXC touch our hardware. They make things worse. They’re even worse than IBM was. We’re being pushed to HVD which I hear is worse that the pcs we have now. And now IBM is taking over part of the IT Group!?!?! God help us all.

DXC handles Employee PC support now. Infinitely worse than IBM was. Why can’t we get that DSC company back to do PC support? Who was DSC, not same as DXC, anyway? We’re they ATT employees who were surplused?

Yeah there are lawyers in IT who vp and have no engineering experience at all. Makes me think they are there to make sure of all the legal checks before the surplus.

There seems to be a trend lately with Chief of Staffs (cos) being promoted to AVP and VP positions. A COS is just a glorified secretary and most of these people just don’t have the experience it takes to run a business. It comes down to who you know. If you have the right connections, you will go places. Sad part is these COS people who have been promoted don’t have the background or skills to effectively make a difference and the people who report to them now are so disheartened by the lack of leadership. It is a morale buster.

Best of luck to you. I wish I was in a position where I could just walk away from that severance but with kids in college I just can't do it. So I sit and wait to be surplussed.

You have to strike while the iron is hot as they say....Hat's off to you for taking the initiative....I stayed after receiving multiple external offers in the past ten years which I seriously considered but in the end I turned down as I liked the work and the people....The environment has changed dramatically and a lot of the people and leaders I revered and respected have left the company, retired or moreover were hit with a surplus.....I now have too many years in and coming and I am coming up upon the dreaded "50" yrs old......From what I hear from friends who have left or who were part of the forced reduction, age discrimination is certainly an obstacle to finding a position...…..

Congratulations! They are not surplussing fast enough for everyone to wait. Everyone needs to decide what is right for them.

A small company can be a joy to work for. Your real skills will become quickly apparent and you will be valued.

Tech Dev is a cesspool of bad management and nepotism - so many talented people have been surplused in favor of a– kissing and cousin/nephew/family who were, unqualified,on day 1
Since they have no creative abilities the answer to any problem is outsource

The management that were good are now silent and collecting checks waiting on the call
The new upcoming managers are lost and only understand outsourcing because they were only trained in that mindset. Soon enough they will go away as they realize it's a dead end job

What is the last in house product developed by Tech Dev internally

SAFe is a deny and distract amind a vehicle for, outsourcing

Good move. There is life beyond this place. It’s easy to talk about how bad things are around here. It’s another to take charge of your future and well being. I applaud your decision. You’ll be a new person away from this drama.

It doesn't take brains or skills to be a manager. You just need thick skin and be okay with people hating you and the willingness to kiss all the smelly a$$. People who are too smart and skillful will not be managers because they see how difficult the work and processes are and know the value of hands on hard work. They don't want to waste their time blowing smoke and sit in long useless meetings. You will see there are a lot of managers out there who can talk but cannot walk. Some can't even do both.

The managers may change but they still s—. Most of them are powerless to do anything for you unless you have a family member high up in the chain. You’re just going to be strung along for several years until they pull the plug on you.

The one lesson I learned was, eventually, managers change. I had a bad one, but I hung in there, and eventually, a better manager came along. That was back in 1989. Retired now.

Managers promoted from within are just as bad. This place is a toxic work environment.

Thanks for leaving voluntarily! It'll help AT&T keep expenses down while meeting our headcount goal.
