Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Some good advice for older employees

This is a reply from another thread, but this is some of the best advice I've read on this site:

Get your CCNA certifications and start applying for IT positions with companies. You’d be surprised how many IT DEPTs will hire an ex at&t employee just because they understand the lingo ! Don’t sell yourself short. You’ve probably forgotten a lot more than the average person has learned. Also most IT personnel hate working on their voip phones and prefer an in-house “phone guy” to deal with them. Lots of job opportunities out there my friend and you’ll be much happier. I also suggest you apply at your local county municipal complex or courthouse and/or county sheriff dept. They tend to hire ex phone company guys too as they have a mixture lot of old copper circuits as well as the new fiber ones. They need folks who can talk to at&t and help diagnose and troubleshoot their circuits and equipment. If you are veteran , that’s an extra foot in the door. Good luck. I’m sorry you have to go thru this.

I let my CCNA expire. It did me absolutely zero good at T.

We are in a trade union, the older employees have seniority and the younger employees will be surplussed.

Yeah that is good advice for any employee in their field of expertise. I.E MCSE, Linux+, etc etc.

This is the best post I observe in this web page communications. That is true, seek your certifications ASAP, which BTW they offer 10 days boot camp in Philly, google it. Is not healthy to be stuck, especially with ATT - the dying elephant.

I’ll add to that: get some Certs in IT security. Everything is about security these days.

Also, to work at at&t all these years means you’ve demonstrated you’ve been a very good boy who shows up on time , is reliable , with no criminal record and already have had background checks. That’s another big plus companies look at when hiring. You’d be amazed at all the people they can’t hire because of something in their background.
