30 is needed when under 50 years of age to retire with a service pension.. Fall short of that and you get screwed. You can retire with less then 30 IF you are at least 50 years old with 25 years in. The "75" that everyone talks about.

Verizon will end Fios 2021 can't afford it. Well that will be their excuse to layoff. You have to look at there 10k report 100k people at $100k is the 10 billion they need to save. Verizon has 144k employees. Netflix has 5400 .Look at there market cap.Always follow the money start your own business

The future is more contracted out work . Depending on how much they need you after 2023 will determine the next contract . Ya got 4 more years so have a backup plan just in case .

@1pgk, how does that personally affect the OP, a union man or woman with 20 years under their belt? Even if the trend is outsourcing, OP's still got longevity.

The future is outsourcing. Anyone can do the work and there are tons of vendors out there that will do it for a fraction of the cost, no pension, no 401k and no medical needed. Thats the way it is in most of the country at this point.

I don't think I have seen a Verizon truck on the road out here in San Francisco since 2014. AT&T doing the same thing.

1lxe, why do you feel you need the full 30? Is it an age/NCSD thing in your particular case? To my knowledge, the 30 number was only important when that milestone guaranteed once meant completely company-provided medical coverage in retirement, but not so much now, as we're all paying regardless of the years we put in.

I am trying to ride it out. But really how many years are left? Will I get my 10 years so i can have 30 years in? Praying so

There will always be a wireline backbone, try to ride it out, but look for new opportunities, do not get complacent. Best of luck, hang in there.

Sure. It's either going to be the current fiber offering or 5G. It will need to be placed, spliced and maintained in your area, will it not? You'll just have less people. You're just tring for 7 to 10 more years, aren't you?
