Pay close attention to the @3nur post. "A recession is two consecutive quarters of NEGATIVE growth" This is what Wall Street has always focused on for decades and we haven’t even seen one yet.

The argument can be made, and rightly so, that when past quarters are revised we may be one foot into a negative quarter....fair enough, but we’re not there. And the bond market inversion argument is interesting but @1uhy also makes a valid point where this past bond inversion was of such a short length of time (five days) that the average length usually runs months.

The sky ain’t falling gang and if you’re young you should be staying put (adjust your accounts if you wish) because before your career is over you will see a lot of Recessions come and go.....those that bailed just over ten years ago missed a 350% run because they felt market pressure, or tried to time the market to get back in...and never did. Timing the market is a fools game and if you’re nearing retirement please get yourself a CFP, Fidelity is full of them, make use of them.

The bond inversion was because the Federal Reserve raised the rates too fast. They've basically admitted they made a mistake. When you artificially raise rates it pushes the short term rates up, while the long term rates have already been low due to low inflation. The inverted yield curve is just a metric and doesn't mean anything in and of itself. Even if it predicted a recession, that recession by past practice could be 2 years out.

We are not in a recession. Q1 GDP was 3.1%. Q2 is probably going to be 1% - 2% range. A recession is two consecutive quarters of NEGATIVE growth. We aren't anywhere near negative growth yet. The Federal Reserve has raised rates SEVEN times under Trump, after leaving them at ZERO% for 8 years. This is why there is a slowing in the economy now. In other words, if there was even a hint of negative GDP growth, the Fed has SEVEN cuts they can makes to keep the economy growing.

@1sao, your bond inversion may be a valid point. But bare in mind that those past inversions lasted, on average, several months in length. The one that has you so upset lasted 5 days.....you may be right, but maybe not.

Clue time...you owe them a day of work, T owes you a day of pay. Hard work and loyalty do NOT matter at any corporation anymore. May not like to hear this but the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will do what is best for you and your family.

I was listening to CNBC, and they were saying that an inverted bond market has to carry on for awhile, and with a Fed interest rate cut in July, that would nip it in the bud.

I wonder what an interest rate cut will do to the price of a dividend paying stock, like T.

I dont have time to give the proper instruction to many of you, but the bond markets leads wallstreet, that tells the recession already started, bond market is sending a loud signal: There's a recession o Such “inversions” are worrisome since the only reason investors would pay less for short-term bonds than long-term ones is if they fear the future is bleak.

A recession or lack of one isn't the issue. The issue is four product lines that are in the decline stage of the product life cycle and a multi-billion dollar debt gamble on a media business that is tied to an ad revenue scheme.

Yep, we're in recession as the stock market hits new highs, and we remain at full employment. 😉

And, boy, this doom and gloom is reflected in AT&T's 2019 stock performance. (Up about 10%)
