Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Workplace moving in 2020

Anyone here been told their main workplace moved to a different city? State? I heard in another dept at ATO that they have at least til 9/2020 to start reporting to the new designated office or quit if unable to relocate. Anyone actually in this situation?

Re: the intention, does that have any effect on severance?

They will not answer this question right now. If I was guessing, I would say if they tell you that starting next year you need to start reporting to a new location in excess of 50 miles from your current one (in ATO they are calling you Phase 2 in this scenario)...when that time comes, if you tell them you are unwilling to do so then they would treat it the same as they have recent surplus situations. In that, if you are one that stuck around to "find an new job" for the 60 day period after you were notified, and they offered you one in excess of 50 miles from your current one, you could decline that and still get your severance. If it was within 50 miles of your current location, if you decline it, you would not be entitled to severance. I don't think they would want to be inconsistent on this, but again, this question has not been officially answered in regard to the recent output of Project Collaboration. Some theorize that the whole thing is just sham to further reduce headcount with the added financial benefit of not paying anyone severance. I personally believe they would be opening themselves up to some liability if they don't pay the severance to someone not willing to report somewhere in excess of 50 miles. Those that are Phase One and need to start reporting to new location that is within 50 miles in next couple months will need to do so or forfeit their severance.

AT&T, like most large corporations today, is run for the benefit of senior executives. It is a direct consequence of the bogus ideology of shareholder value. It's all wrapped up in language that makes it sound like the only ethical way to run a business but in practice it is used by executives to loot the corporation via stock buybacks, debt fueled growth by acquisition, and myriad accounting and finance tricks to goose apparent executive performance.

You, and me and especially the customer are just a means to an end. We all exist (in executive eyes) to help them enrich themselves. Don't be fooled. If you relocate you will most likely be far from family, friends, and other support systems when they lay you off anyway. Under no circumstances should you incur any debt to move. Trusting a company like AT&T is a recipe for poverty if you get into debt to move. Say yes to stall them and look for another job. You owe them nothing.

Being moved to different building within same city, honestly think it’s more about the number of buildings sold and or up for sale. CRE has to identify top one or two locations that we’ll own or lease back for those of us left working beyond 2020. It’s like a nation wide reorg as you sell off buildings and cut head count they want to reshuffle the deck. Also seems like a convenient way to get people to quit or retire on their own saving the company money via severance and possibly larger pension down the road. I’ll report to new location, no big deal BUT I’d think long and hard about moving my family across the state our country. I’d probably just say, sure I’ll move by 9/2020 then start looking for another job.

@sxd, nuts and to think I’ve been tricked for over 30 years!! A small FYI for those still in New Jersey, we led all other states for the most people moving out of their home state....hmm, wonder why?

We are having to move sometime next year to another city. In the last 10 years, the company has sold 4 buildings in my area. That leaves only 2 left, and they are talking about selling one of them in the not so distant future. The writing is on the wall. Open your eyes. Observe all the buildings the company has sold and how many are left!

no company guarantees work, locations change and you need to decide what works for you, I was told to relocate (on my own dollars) and decided it was the best thing for my family, correct there is no guarantee, but right now I would have a job in that new location. getting to decide by 9/2020 would have been nice, I was given about 3 total months to make it happen, having all Tech Dev do skills profile updates sounds to me like another outsourcing, hope not this move would have been for nothing

Yes. Criteria is if your new assigned location is over 50 miles you have until next year to start reporting there., I am in that boat as well as many I know. If you move your family on your own dime for this company at this point in time you are a complete mo--n. They also are requesting the intention of those notified that they need to move their work location for Phase 2 (i.e. will you be staying or do you intend to leave, etc,). If you help them out in that regard, you're also a complete mo--n. Take the better part of the year to land your new gig and then tell them to pack sand with 2 weeks notice.

Did you get the power point slides? This is why they categorized each location into tiers. If you are in a tier 5, 4, or even 3 work location, you are screwed.

In 1984 if I wanted to keep my job at T I had to move 120 miles away. New school for the kid. On my dime. Within a month.

Their call, my choice.

I moved. After commuting 5 hrs a day for 3 weeks until I found a place to live there.

This is nothing new.

The way you folks look at it is.

Drive, or quit.

Pretty simple.

beware. relocation doesnt guarantee employment. the company has uprooted families over the last 3-4 years without any hesitation and then went ahead a whacked a large % of those post move. latest examples are moves to texas and calf.

The sad thing is ATO will not pay for relocations. They only pay for relocating brain dead AVPs to Dallas.
