I'm a old timer maintenance tech, I don't know why VZ doesn't just deny service and turn wireline off. It obviously cost more money to keep it repaired than what's it worth. Maybe it's like a 57 Chevy in Cuba and they have no choice but to keep it running. It was a cash cow for decades but the old steam engine ma Bell has seen her better days.

The OP is what is wrong with Verizon 2.0. None of these id--ts knows what business we are it or how we actually make money. And forget about the underlying technology. I'll bet there are never two people on the Starbuck's line that know how to use a screwdriver or that a pair of Dikes is not a 'pair of dykes'.
In FIOS areas this done , everyday . When a copper maint tech has to spend too much time on a copper repair the customer is given a chance to switch to FIOS or loss service . Some road construction projects call for the removel of the existing copper plant after the subs have been moved to FIOS. This is not done on all road projects but many and whenever possible. VZ transformation is taking place but very slowly .... with very little OT .

Apparently he doesn't know about FCC, PUC/PSC and the requirements behind them. A troll that s---s at lying about who he is. If you are an “old tome maintenance tech”, then surely you know much of Wireline is a regulated entity.......
Not disagreeing about the obsolesence of landline telephones, but I think tge availability of service is required by law.
"turn wireline off" ??? I'm wondering if you actually meant to ask if we should turn servicing of copper POTS and copper special circuits off, or are you just a troll? I doubt you could really be an old timer and say we could "turn wireline off".

These "facts" are calculated and presented in a way favorable to the business in order to avoid regulation and minimize labor costs, especially the unionized portion of employees. Bruce Kushnick has done extensive research into the history of the business backed up with numbers, anyone who is interested can Google him for more info.
Can't blame the company for seeking to minimize cost or avoid regulation, but as a consumer and citizen I wish the government had applied title 2 to the internet, and I wish they had pressured Verizon and other companies to building high speed internet FIOS level nationwide, it would be expensive but worth it in terms of what it could do for rural areas with low real estate costs.
Wireline declined 3.9% while Wireless gained 3.7% last quarter. Wireline will get restructured, or sold at some point. A company doesn’t simply sit by, lose money and do nothing about it. Something will be done to address the regular quarterly wireline losses. FiOS and One Fiber will be restructured as an augment to wireless, which since being taken over by VZB is the primary business now. These are facts, you’ll see.

How could any old timer maintenance tech be so ignorant of the industry they work in? The general public might think that because POTS residential landlines are dying that means the entire network is obsolete, but how could a tech not know it is still in use?
If he is a real tech, he must be an ignorant country bumpkin. Maybe in his backwater town there are no major businesses using fiber landline and even copper landline circuits. In the cities there are. Do you seriously think these Manhattan companies are running their entire businesses on 5G Unicorn farts? id--t.

If the OP ever worked for the company then perhaps the only maintenance they did were janitorial.
All of us 'old-timer' techs fully understand the FCC and State regulations governing service. A company just does not turn off the lights and lock the door at a whim.
You need to retire with that kind of negative thinking, seriously.
I seriously doubt you ever worked for this company if you have to ask something like that. But I'll answer anyway.
The company has franchise agreements that obligate them to provide dialtone. One of the requirements is for service that can call 911 and that's it. If you ask for it they have to provide it. Refusing just one leads to a large problem with the regulators. A policy of refusing everybody and sticking with it... let's just say the stock would go down in value.
