Two older folks were let go from my group. Good achievers and good people. That manner of sneaky layoffs in smaller portion disgusts me even more that organized waves. Sad to look at the situation where once a good company has become a machine for constant layoffs, in which no one is safe anymore.

See, @1wxj, and you had been conditioned by politicians to believe unions were the evil enemy. Looking around my craft shop, it appears folks in their 50s are the largest growing demographic rather than on the decline, though those in their 60s are gaining some ground.
white males in their 50s I assume?
That is the enemy
The best thing one can do is leave the Sinking Titantic. They have no clue no plan and it will only be more of the same in the future. Get rid of the baggage of Verizon 2.0 and the leaderless group of executives you will be happy you did instead of continual wait and see and stress, just GO GO GO. they don't deserve any good workers. Poor Management and I cant say enough about the over paid and clueless leaderless executives.
Ditto, yes ageism works both ways, but believe me it is worst when you are in your fifties and sixties, been there done that, especially when you are first to be RIF.
Ageism works both ways. I've been the significantly younger, best candidate multiple times and rejected for a 40 something incompetent person that's totally new to the function. Then, I had to bail them out over and over again. I have more to learn for sure, but I was definitely skipped for worse candidates.
Once again ageism running wild at VZ.
The layoffs seem to have accelerated after 2015
The stealth layoffs hurt more, merely a sleazy method to avoid bad PR.
This is 2.0 wake up...no one will be Safe or super...full of sadness and stress.. silent layoffs... better to leave rather than working here..the sooner the better Life..we are not in Safe hands.
A union would have helped.
