Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Do any of the younger workers really see a long term career at Verizon?

I have to be honest, if I had this state of mind 7 years ago when I joined VZ, I would have never considered this company as a place to build my career, much less to spend my working life there. In that sense, I;m courious what do the younger employees think about VZ as a place to stay long ter and build a carrier. I would appreciate honest answers from younger folks if there are any on this board.

No, but it's not Verizon specific. It's a new world, you no longer stay at a company your entire life. Companies don't owe you sh-- and they will let you know it.

@2zes not true. Vesting is 3 years for everyone. Go read the plan documents.

It’s like we are two different companies! And on top of that, we don’t communicate well for being in the communication business! People are arguing if it is 3 or 5 years before your 401k is vested. Wireless is 3 years...wireline is 5 years. Sheesh!

vesting is still 3 years

Stay at least 5 years so you vest in your 401k. Don't let Verlieson keep that money.

I would NEVER take a job where the vesting period was 5 years! It's stupid enough that I stayed at VZ where the vesting period was 3. Did they really change it to 5? If so, you guys are getting f-cked. You'll probably get riffed in 5 years.

@2qyq

What is Verizon doing that gives you so much confidence?

They're circling the drain. When the 5G hype crashes and burns Verizon will start selling off the pieces.

Verizon's strategy, tools, and processes are stuck in 1992. It's not easy to build a future at a company stuck in 1992. Ironically, we also acquired some top companies from the 90s... Aol & Yahoo

No wonder so many veterans bailed! What a bunch of wimps. Verizon is a great place to build a future, but you have to move with the market and the times. You may not be doing the same thing but you will be doing a good thing and will be able to sleep at night. We still have a good business that has been around for more than 100 years. All along the way, there were changes in technology and structure, but we still do the same thing, and people like what we sell.

I'm just now approaching the 2 year mark and couldn't be more solid in my decision to leave soon. Terrible management (10 different GM's and SM's) in a 2 year period, each more incompetent than the last. Write ups and sh-- scheduling for anyone that's not an a-- kisser to the sh-- management team. I have 0 loyalty to this company and am actively searching for a new job. When I find that new job I'm for sure not giving a 2 week notice. We have 4 reps on final warning and we've had 2 new hires no call no show within the first week because the atmosphere in the store is so terrible. I guess this is what happens when you hire a mo--n to manager because of their looks and not their leadership skills.

Band6 management employee (DMTS), took the VSP within two years of joining.

As others have said - 2-3 years and then move on. Once you’re in the company you’re capped at pay increases even when moving up a band - you have to go outside to get the larger jumps in pay.

Depends on where you are at within the company. Some jobs are marketable outside of Verizon. If you are a fiber splicer, you don’t have to worry about finding a job if you leave Verizon...there are plenty of jobs out there in this field. If you are a copper splicer, fios installer, wireless employee, clerk, etc., your job isn’t in demand anymore. If you want to put 30 years in with this company, you’ll need to find a job that deals with fiber...either a splicer, perhaps a linemen. Just my two cents. This isn’t the old phone company where you had a lifetime job. Sorry to say but those days are gone.

Also trapped. 10 years in and highly skilled in a technical discipline that means absolutely nothing outside of the company. I can only find jobs that pay about half of what I'm making today. I should have taken the VSP. I used to love my job, but this 2.0 business is gonna turn me back in to an alcoholic.

Millenial here... 32. You should always look for promotions internal and external every 3 years and get a promotion every 5 years max. The actual company is irrelevant as long as its fortune 100 or your specific niche. Saying the company is more important than your own development is misguided and leaves your future to chance.

They do not. And this is exactly the way Vz would like it.

@eeh .... yep, absolutely correct. Stay two to three years, learn what you can, start that 401K and then move on. The only loyalty that Verizon has is to the stockholder. Employees are only an inconvenience that must be dealt with when necessary.

Whether management or craft, stay a few years, learn what you can and then move on. The longer you stay in the telecom business the longer you are trapped in it. The skill set for the most part is very specific to the industry and most skill sets will not translate well into other industries.

11 years in. Trapped because it’s a high paying job in an otherwise low paying area. I’ve never felt secure in this job, always fearful of write ups or layoffs. Targets and quotas aren’t achievable and are harder than ever to make decent money. I’ve been moved around between many stores in the zone and have literally had 40 different managers from supervisors & solutions managers on up. Every time it’s like starting fresh with development, and each one said their goal was to promote from within. Never happens. The work life balance is awful, causing you to miss time and experiences with family/friends. I don’t know how anyone here has kids. The only solutions specialists who had a child while working here over the years was unplanned. This company just drains your life

Verizon is essentially the community college of American corporations. Obtain 2-3 years of work experience and jump ship, Verizon is not the company to build a career or marketable skills.
