Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

stop bashing att. its the best job you would have ever hoped for

many employees and i mean 98% of them are lazy and outdated. this is the best it will get for you and basically no other main tech company would give you a glance. so shut up and keep doing the minimum and that work isn't much any way. certainly not hard work. your life is a joke. dont tell the spouse or your kids how lazy you were in your career. pathetic.

@YT2y9h8-3fiu You’re only taxed on pre-tax 401K contributions when you take distributions. One strategy is to take out enough to remain in the lowest tax bracket and supplement the rest of your monthly income with your pension, social security (until it becomes insolvent unless “fixed”), and Roth 401K contributions.

Personally I’m only contributing to my Roth 401K and paying my taxes now in anticipation of higher taxes later. The majority of your 401K is going to be from growth.

For example: Over a 30 year period you contribute $200,000 out of pocket. The 401K value after 30 years is $1,000,000. The growth is $800,000

In an all Roth situation you pay taxes on the $200,000 and the $800,000 is tax free.

"Wait until you pay the taxes on that 401K, you won't have 1 million. Then wait until by time you retire, with inflation, your money is worth 60% less than when you started with AT&T."

So what is your point exactly @3fiu ? Are you better off not investing in your 401K then, because you'll eventually have to "pay the taxes"? Remind me not to consult you for financial planning. By the way, you could elect to pay your taxes now, and invest after taxes in the Roth 401K option if you're that concerned about paying taxes on the growth later. Of course you'd lose the tax benefit today. Different factors to consider there but I know I'm already over your head.

@YT2y9h8-2nik You're absolutely correct. I'd rather the company allocate the pension contributions into my 401K in the form of a higher match. While my current $300K pension if I were to leave now is nothing to laugh at, it would have been much higher if invested in my sizeable 401K instead.

Well this was entertaining. A couple observations:

  1. To the articulate OP, punctuation and sentence structure is a thing. Try it, you'll be taken more seriously.

  2. To angry disgruntled former T employee "I have a pension" anti -401K guy: Good for you. This statement you made: "401K is the vehicle you put money into.....Pensions are the vehicle the employer puts money into (for you)" is not entirely correct. The employer also contributes significantly to the 401K in the form of a match, and over time this is quite significant. Pensions have become rare these days. But an employee who contributes regularly to the 401K and takes advantage of that match can do just fine. I'm here 25 years (still here). Lucky to have the pension as well as the 401K. I can tell you I'm a lot more excited over the 1 million the 401K than I am over the pension.

@YT2y9h8-2ngu - lying about sleep time. Lying about $400.00 dollars a day. Lying about OT response for storms and fire. We all know Prem Techs don’t do that type of OT. And last but not least lying about your nonexistent pension. Still, have a good sleep you low level bottom feeder. Hahaha nighty night Loser.

@YT2y9h8-2grh Damn I missed the 9PM sleep time because I was watching my free HBO. Oh well. Time to go to bed to make that $400+ tomorrow and grow my pension as well. Oops... no OT at the moment but it'll be more than made up when the fires and storms come. Time to log off my sweet discounted 100Mbps connection. Good night and good dreams of the days of T employment!

@YT2y9h8-1juc maybe I come here because I still have friends who work at T or have had friends who got the surplus letter. I put the company and don't get personal except for post like yours and the OP's. You two are making it personal. But I guess you need to do it to keep your job.

I am doing just fine and yearn for nothing except my friends who are still at T get to reach their goals in life and are happy.

I hope you are happy too.

Dear OP - I now have a job with less stress, more pay (some people I know who also were laid off doubled their salaries, how's that for market value) with a company that is not hemorrhaging customers. Who's the loser?

Why am I here? Morbid curiosity. Everyone I talk to "back there", all sound like walking wounded, and 1/2 of their knowledge is probably more than you'll ever now. If you were smart, you'd be p--ping bricks right now having to re-invent the wheel.

@YT2y9h8-1jws - here’s something useful. Layoffs will continue and no one is safe. They’ll get 1st level Managers. Next will be Engineers. Next in line is Marketing, Project Managers. Special Project Personnel then Craft. Prem Techs, Term Employees. Linemen hired for the Fiber Build. Splicers. Installers. Office support. I’m sure you’re in one of those titles. I know you are not the Worker Bee Loser. Best of luck. Sometimes it best not to be last on the ship.

@YT2y9h8-1gak - Worker Bee Loser... I’m here because I’m curious about the Company’s overall direction. I still have friends there that have to deal with uncertainty. I’m here to say that if you get selected it’s not the end of the world unless they’re in s position like you where there is no pension and access to the 401k savings is years away. You Mr. Loser will be screwed when you get selected. As a Prem Tech, you know your time is short. Go to work Monday and earn your paycheck. The way you act, we know you hate your job, hate your Boss hate that you’re a low level bottom feeder that is a short timer with no pension. I really enjoy interacting with you. You’re a loser and deep down you know I’m correct. Loser. Hahaha

OP - I read your post and I wonder who would post such a thing on site where people who have just lost their livelihood who either see their job go overseas after training their replacement or see the company post new hire positions that they just laid off.

I assume you are with asset management or something trying to save the reputation of a company who throw people out and move them around without ever considering an opinion from the employee.

I kept my skills up to date on my own with my own time and money not the harvard c-ap, or T university the company was shoving down our throats. I was asked to help another org to solve a problem and take a look at something they were working on. I was immediately stopped by my supervisor because the org's money came from a different bucket. That started the ball rolling and I got my resume out and was offered three different jobs on my first three submissions. After I accepted my new position with my new company I was even offered a fourth.

That is the company you are defending. They are not keeping the best and smartest people and the management is playing political games with people's careers who had the company's best interest at heart. I have seen people talk bs at meetings and were wrong and proven wrong but yet they were promoted and they do not get on a surplus list. These are the decisions that management is making.

So now you come here and tell us to stop bashing the company. I can't take you seriously and you must be on soulless person to tell people what to do after they have had the rug pulled out from under them and are forced to stop working.

T has a problem and your post exposes the problem in a bright and shining light. T is not a tech company. They are a communication company that does what they want, when they want, and how they want regardless of consequences or how "the tech" is suppose work. Well I hope they get to live with those consequences eventually.

I tell every college graduate to stay far far away from T and so far the ones I have told have taken my advice. I also have dropped all their services and recommend them to no one.

Eventually people get tired and just stop listening or dealing with companies.

@YT2y9h8-1sgv - at your Wage Scale that’s all it is, a nice wage. You’ll be gone soon enough and you won’t even come close to what I walked away with. I do dream but not of ATT. I can’t believe how arrogant you are for being a bottom feeder. Remember how you prayed ATT would pick you up. The Company gave you an opportunity to have some dignity yet your arrogance surfaced to think you are an important employee. You’re lucky your Supervisor hasn’t pulled trigger on you. Be where you’re supposed to be and work your tickets truthfully. I’ll bet you’re already on a productivity program. Monday is coming Worker Bee. Back to the grind loser. Don’t kid yourself, you are a loser. With no pension. Hahaha.

@YT2y9h8-jlc - Worker Bee, you keep lying about a pension. You’re fooling no one. Come Monday I sleep in while you slave away. I’m thinking you’re a very Disgruntled Employee that is probably a Prem Tech that has been the Tip of the Spear yet not considered by ANYONE to be a REAL employee of the Company. Can’t climb. Can’t do anything but play in the Customer’s house. No you don’t have anything but the HUGE ego that isn’t paid a decent wage scale. I put in my time. I’m out with a lot of money. You need to put in the time to PRAY you get to where the money is good. Use the AUTS Program, it’s the only way you’ll make any REAL money. You won’t last another 10yrs. LOSER.

@YT2y9h8-pqn“You’ll always be a Worker Bee that gets no respect.”

The important part is I’m still working for AT&T with a growing pension and a very healthy 401K. You on the other hand are just another disgruntled at&t reject. Have a nice life constantly looking back and whining instead of moving on.

Tech company? Not really.....it’s a telecommunications company that once ruled the country’s communications. The most reliable well built network in the world. It was forced to compete by way of the telecommunications act of 1996. They have tried and tried to evolve but just can’t seem to get it right. From dsl to uverse to directv to fiber and of course Time Warner purchase. The company is “ the network “ designed, built and maintained by dedicated men and women for more than a century. From bell labs to western electric and everything in between. To refer to long time employees as useless is a reflection of your ignorance. You don’t know what you don’t know. Read your history. Once the benchmark for outstanding service has been reduced to a company of the me me me generation that know everything. Disappointing to say the least.
