Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

When people left, all that experitise and knowledge walked right out the door

As an almost 20 year employee who left (voluntarily) several months ago, I saw tremendous change during my tenure there. There was less and less regard or even acknowledgement of the actual work getting done and who was doing it. And more and more constant re-orgs and new plans. Also, less and less real importance put on accuracy of the content. Managers were chosen for their LACK of understanding about the actual work and because they were someone’s favorite of the week to promote. There was alot of talk about the value of accuracy and timeliness of the content, but when it really came down to it, there was no understanding or willingness to actually put any resources into it. Employees felt more and more like chess pieces being moved around and discarded in spite of their knowledge base or expertise. There was little documentation of how the work was actually being done and how to keep doing it so when people left, all that experitise and knowledge walked right out the door.

Well, I think that @XCnpqlA-7txw worded this up really well. This post deserved a thread of its own.

My department is losing 4 out of 6. Average years here about 25 years. That is a lot of institutional knowledge going out the door for nothing more than stockholder greed.

Consultants believe in the mantra “life will find away.” They worry about the ledger, not the work because they believe the critical work will get done as those remaining fill the gaps. It’s a terrible strategy, make that no strategy, but it’s done this way all the time. By the time the products erode to the point where customer attrition becomes too severe to be ignored, we will be restructured again or sold.

Why are you working 12 hour days for a company that doesn’t care about you? I try to put in my 8 hours and then go home.

I think they just want the company to exist for few more years until time to dismantle...

I think the CEO and the top executive wants to enjoy their money and lifestyles so they just do whatever the Thomson family wants.

I saw one of their wife wearing huuuuuge diamonds ring during the president club trip...& these top management make over couple of millions of dollars a year and firing regular workers like they mean nothing.

Couldn’t agree more.

I’ve just been handed a half dozen new products. My boss just seems to picking names out of a hat in reassigning work. One of the products has no documentation and the guy who “trained” me only worked on the product for a month, the previous employee that worked on it was so p-ss-d off by getting fired never shared any info on how the product was maintained. I’m putting in 12 hour days on the regular. Till the wave of job actions hits me.

Meanwhile, tons of employees are WFH with zero accountability. There’s an employee I pass everyday on my way to the coffee machine who watches Netflix at work.

All reflective of a company without a clue. Meaningless “values” and a lack of strategic direction. They are so out of touch they have to have employee surveys because they are not sure where their staff are at, or what they are feeling. Bad survey results are constantly ignored because that might mean the expenditure of money to “alleviate” the problem. A culture of individual competiveness, when collaboration should have been encouraged. And they pay those at the top big bucks to do what - constant cost cutting. Sad and pathetic.

I agree and it's tragic since our products used to be the best and I was proud to work here. Not anymore. It's a sinking ship and those in charge dont even care. The level of indifference is not sustainable.
