Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Any ideas on how big this will get?

Now that we have an official confirmation that major layoffs are coming to AT&T, is there any way to know just how major they are going to be?

Also, will any people get a chance to transfer or will the consolidation favor those who already work at the surviving locations?

What is ATO position?

I can't see the company going down to 100k. I was laid off in September so it is not wishful thinking for me, but the company could not operate with 100k unless they really ramped up their contract force, which I am part of now. I do remember them saying they wanted to reduce their headcount by 33% back in 2015. This is when they introduced their Vision 2020 program. If you are wanting to re-tool you won't do it with their PLE video's. Those things are useless. You should take college courses at night. I do remember though when I was there that they made our groups do the same video's. It didn't matter if you had no college or a Masters in Engineering. The treated all of us as the being on the same level, which makes no sense. There was no choice in what we had to watch.

If I were still at AT&T and younger I would take computer programing courses or something similar. I don't think the higher-ups even think that the video's are very good. If they were there would be head-hunters from the large .com companies wanting everyone who has watched the video's.

@X2tbWp3-1anf Not sure who you are agreeing with. The Article simply states that the retraining effort is focused on ~100k employees not reducing headcount to 100k.

@1jdq, I have to agree, but not with you Kimosabe. I researched the web and found no such "fake" info on reducing the workforce to just 100K employees.

I saw Fortune Mags article, among many others, to "Retrain" that many employees and perhaps you thought it read as “Retain.” That’s the best out I can give you and as they say “The devils in the details.”

@X2tbWp3-1ism Clearly you don’t know enough about current operations to understand what you are saying. There are many people whose work is in step with the corporate goals for 2020 and we have been working towards it for years. Wish all the bad luck and hate on anyone you want, but you are just making statements that are not true. There is no article that says we will reduce to 100k employees, but there were many people in jobs that needed to be reskilled due to technology changes. Yes there will be a large lay-off that’s obvious, but you would be the last person to know the numbers given your previous statements.

So if the layoffs are going to be significant (ie 150k employee reduction by 2020) will T still pay severance?

I am in ATO/TFS and in a very unique facility. We've not been told a word and in fact our crew just added another site.

Clearly you haven’t paid attention for years. The company isn’t saying let’s retool 100k employers and the rest can keep doing what they’re doing. Read the article. You must not watch any townhalls, read anything on AT&T University, do any training or have any mentoring. Do you even have a future work title? Hopefully you’re laid off so you save someone else who gets it.

@X2tbWp3-jrg the 96-100k employees was the number to be targeted for skills pivot, not the company size. Not everyone in the company had to be re-skilled.

10 Sites Domestically: Oakton, Va. Bedminster, NJ. Atlanta, GA, Chicago, IL, St Louis, MO, Dallas, TX. Denver, CO. Redmond, Wa, San Ramon, CA., El Segundo, Ca.

If you can’t commute there, you’re probably out of a job by 2020 or earlier. Also assuming you have pivoted your skills and kept up the “optional” training.

Good luck.

So where are these collaboration zones?? Are they in the states not mentioned in the 10?

The email that was leaked to motherboard was from the ATO organization. However, the layoffs are not just confined to that organization it is company wide. Numbers have not yet been announced but from what I have heard it is focused on location. They want you to be in a collaboration zone.

The company wants to be at roughly 100k employees. Research articles (google, fortune) from Randal and Donovan talking about all the new training and retooling AT&T is doing and there you will find the 95-100k employee company size target for 2020. Currently AT&T is about 250k. Do the math. 2 years. 150k jobs lost. You can also do the math on the collaboration locations and how many employees they can handle, plus international... 7-8k per location.

The company wants data scientists and software/app developers. Beyond that, not much is needed. Get the traditional AT&T model out of your heads and you’ll accept the coming change better.

Concerned about outside plant and operations for them? Don’t need many techs to install internet when devices are drop shipped to customers, contractors and vendors install already on our network... change is here.

And if you think only work from home employees are affected, you’re missing the target. If your work location isn’t a collaboration zone, you’re a target. And let go of your day to day operations and how you need to be where you are to do your job... your job isn’t needed (reread above).

What official confirmation? The company spokesman says “this only involves a very small portion of the workforce”. I am sure that is why Donovan can’t sleep at night. I guess they are learning to spin from CNN.

We got the same email to that effect way back in November 13 at Global business. Guess it's ongoing across the board.

The recent announcement/ email went out last Fri to all ATO managers, though in it he alluded to reductions in other organizations as well (no further detail though).
