Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

This needed to be on top

In order to have people off payroll before the beginning of Q2 (the common tactic), the announcements would come within the couple weeks.

The RFI process:

  1. Make an announcement that a group is impacted on a group call.

  2. Upper leadership spends 2 weeks or so grading people's value on a 1-5 scale, most (if not all) of which is based on how they feel about that person. (very biased most times)

  3. The impacted employees are made aware on individual calls.

  4. The impacted employees have 60 days before they are off payroll.

Since the whole process takes little over 75 days, they would need to make the group announcement about 3 months prior to when they want people off payroll (which would likely be the last few weeks of March).

@1mql - something similar happened to me - job was brought to my attention by a co-worker who passed on it, got to interview stage and the job description changed to something very different.

At least I tried to find an internal opportunity per the 60-day stipulation, so got my severance without delay.

Isn't happening that way this time due to disruptions in the past. New rules to learn. Stay tuned.

60 days notice is more for training your replacement than for getting a new job. There is definitely something fishy going on. I’d spend more time looking elsewhere unless you have some firm connections on the inside. I got emails about eight months after being surplussed saying the posting I applied for finally closed and I was not qualified.

There are a few that will get offers on the final week for one reason or another. I guess they co operated with the mafia and played the game somehow. The true openings do not seem to be posted on career path.

Guys, advice, do not waste time looking for ATT if get the notice. I was surplus, and applied to 500 jobs, and interview 3 times. And this what I find out: positions either fake- as I contacted all managers in the department they suppose to be hiring and nobody hear any openning. In mater of fact one of the managers ask me to send the job openning so he can apply for it. Then the jobs I interview for was fake interview as well. They only focus on 20% that you do not know. Then said they want somebody come do job from day 1. Oh well, thought to share my experience, as was painful.

I have seen steps #1 and #2 reversed. They already know who is staying or going before the group call. They are hoping some will go ahead and leave on their own and they won't have to pay them severance. What is sleazy is some organizations already have the list ready and are delaying the announcement until after Christmas. I would rather know one way or another so I could adjust my Christmas spending.

Slim to none. They’re in downsizing mode now. Basically you’re gone

What are the chances of managers finding other jobs in the company?

That is indeed the standard procedure for management surplus activity.

That method of laying off is more for non union employees because for regular tech/union employees they do not use a grading system. They can let you know that day and you’re done.
