Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Anybody closer to a decision?

For those undecided, did weekend help any? I'm personally leaning more and more toward taking the offer.

@1zmj as a side note. I am in a position of power right now as I still have a job. I could always negotiate for higher pay or a signing bonus in order to compensate for leaving VZ without the severance pay. If they did not want to play ball then I walk and no harm done.

@1zmj I will take that one step at a time. I put down I was available for work on 1/1/19. If that changes I will cross the bridge at that time. If they can't make it work then I will go find a new job. Does not hurt to try!

@1rnu, and they’re okay with the uncertainty of your departure? You not only win the crown, you get the castle.

12 years here but started young. Hit the button day one and out looking for a new job. Already have an interview with another company making about the same, but that company is growing and not shrinking like this one. Job market is good in my city though.

@1jnu, my relatives in Spain are happy with it.

I’d be willing to deal with the tradeoff of no cost coverage as opposed to $26,000.00 a year.

I’d use the savings to spend it for additional care if the need for some specialist came up.

@1efx I have many friends in Canada who will all tell you that their health care system is not the best. They have very long waits for many things (ex: an MRI for a torn meniscus? 6 months). Some come here for treatment.

@1hvm, you have been conditioned to believe the money is not there, and those English commies are deluded. However, I do not feel those in England, France, Italy... , or our neighbors in Canada are deluded in the least. We’re the deluded ones. Honestly ask yourself why there’s not such a system here. Take your blinders off and ponder who has the most to lose. It isn’t you and me by a long shot. Follow the money and the lobbying trail. Their very affective and so insidious that they’ve got you thinking their way against your own interests, and you don’t even know you’ve been duped.

@1blj The socialists in EU will have to go to work- lobbying, rioting and looting when economies collapse due to the inability to pay for their "free" health care and pension benefits.

Hey 1nip, if we were in Europe, this would be a no-brainer for many, having the peace of mind of knowing that the burden of very expensive medical, dental and vision insurance had been completely lifted from our shoulders in our later years.

Darn those lucky socialists. At least us capitalists are free to work until we’re dead.

We showed them!

"...I have no ambition for another job...I'll keep the job I hate, until they force me out. Id rather have a steady paycheck."

I'm choosing to leave because this is an accurate character sketch of the majority mindset I see in those who stay. Maybe it's escapee bias, maybe dead-sea effect - who knows?

Old guy here, seen a bunch of rif's, retirements or whatever. It always is more expensive than you think to live. Insurance cost are sky high. Are you really going to get that much more to go? If you are sure I would say Hell yea, go. If you are afraid to stay, I would think about it long and hard before you click the button. At my age it's a no brainer, wouldn't be if I were younger.

There seems to be two groups posting which is confusing. 1) The IT folks going to Infosys and 2) The other network peeps.

Every situation is different. Personally I needed 3 more years to retire. I can probably make taking the package work.

Look at it this way. The company has identified 44K people that are expendable. You can easily see the jobs targeted on the micro site. It leans heavily to getting rid of operations and technical staff. I even found someone in computing who is 82!

If you stay it is just a matter of time before they RIF you. They know what they to shed. Anyone that tells you what will happen is lying. My guess is from maybe nothing to reorgs and outsourcing.

The standard 2 week package might not be offered because they already tipped their hand with Infosys and only back tracked because of lawsuit exposure. They might even do what other companies have done a just give you a couple months severance. You can’t believe anything you are told. Hans said no layoffs unless the job function is just not needed anymore. Well I guess 44K are not needed. I honestly think they should have just proceeded with a RIF and given you the enhanced package. It would less cruel. You don’t take this and now will be running scared.

I agree it’s too risky to stay. 30+ here and I hit the button. Reconsidering, BC the insurance is too high. Wish we all could agree together to force the company to uncap and or improve the medical offering.

The subsidy is a farce. I have a 64% subsidy. Going into retirement. However it is 64% of the cost of the insurance of the cost of the insurance back in 2008. Which is a dollar amount and that is the amount applied to the insurance cost today. My plan will cost me $24k if it does not go up in 2019 and I lose the ability to insure 2 kids that are 21&23 . I know there are many who will only have access and no subsidy however those benefits were earned over a 26 year period but stripped away while executives bail out with golden parachutes.

After much thought and financial review have decided to risky to stay after 35+ years. Taking the VSP and will start the next chapter a few years earlier then planned.

@afp Depends on whether or not you have a subsidy, which plan you pick and how many people you cover. Call the benefits office and they can answer your questions.

Taking the money and running. I will have paid time off to prepare to look for a job. If I go to Infy, I could be worked to death without having enough time to prepare for another job.

My parents oh 13k a year as their portion of c-appy employee provided insurance with a high deductible. Employer pays about the same so could be expensive.

Can someone give a ball-park on the projected medical costs. This is retiree medical or something else?

Projected medical costs are way too high for many. Be great if company realized this and changed the offer to offset these costs in some way.

I just can't. 16 yrs in, oldest kid is still 4 yrs away from going to college. I have no ambition for another job and start from scratch with vacation days and tenure at some other $hitty company.

I'll keep the job I hate, until they force me out. Id rather have a steady paycheck than have to deal with being new and playing the game at another c-appy job for less pay.

I have not been undecided since the rebadged were offered the VSP. Sure, no cap would have been nice, but I'm outta here. Not working for a foreign company. If I get bored I'll pick up a part time job. Something not even closely related to IT.

I had hit the button and it was a great relief. I’ve since unchecked it.

I really should have gone ten years ago so I could go into the career I wanted. I made a mistake and stayed now I’m too old to start a physical job where the rest of the folks would be half my age.

I actually got offers in my current job at other companies. Sure they are less pay so I may stick it out a while till either I find something that won’t make me sick or at able to retire ito a part time job.

No new information... the cap isn't an issue for me, with 21 years I'm just losing way less years than the standard package. There's a possibility VZ won't sign a contract with a provider on the network I am an engineer on- been 10 months of negotiations. I'd love to know if they're ultimately not going to sign- that would be a deciding factor.

My decision has changed, the button was hit early on. Yes, I've thought deep on whats next after 17+ years at one company. Yes, I thought whoa..... should I stay? I don't feel the company owes me anything and I think there will be many who stay that will flourish after the dust settles. BUT, I would hate to stay and worry about being tapped on the shoulder regularly. Not an easy decision for most I've talked to....

Not yet. I'm hearing some who pushed the button are having second thoughts because of the cost of medical. They could've made this just a little better to get closer to their number. Now they will have to rif more than expected to get there. And most of those leaving would have raised their hand for a regular rif.
