This is the date that AT&T according to contract has to announce layoffs for the last quarter so we expect the Southeast Region (BellSouth) to be full of chaos and mayhem for craft and management, time will tell, expect the worse because we have too many managers anyway, way too many area managers and first line managers should be totally extinct in the near future based on technology of technicians being monitored by gps, getting jobs on ipad, explaining all work in narratives, what is need for first line managers, NO NEED

Unions are needed now more than ever. The job market now is going towards temp/contract work which means no benefits, no holiday pay, no 401K, no health insurance , sick time or vacation pay. If you get sick or need surgery you’re fired. As a matter fact, you can be fired for whatever reason and will receive no unemployment or severance.
so what are you planning to do with that Engineering Degree, are you moving to Bangalore, or the Philippines? LoL
AT&T will not pay for talent, they rather acquire companies
I'm craft, 52 years old, with 18 years seniority, its taken me 7 years to earn my engineering degree. I could see this coming in 2009. The writing has been on the wall for a long time now. Obtain a education in something real and relevant.
I will tell you this.
If the company can find a reason to fire someone with over 20 years they’ll jump at the chance.
One you hit 30 and full pension they leave you alone.
Been there.
Retired with 37 years.
The main reason for not having a seniority system for layoffs is, it could provide the company with a means of culling people that are about to qualify for retirement benefits.
While the unions have something to do with that, take the example of HP several years ago. They said they were going to lay off all of our lousy employees. The employees said OK, you've flagged us as lousy, so now we're unemployable, and proceeded to sue HP.
Last I heard, seniority has much higher priority at HP because it prevents lawsuits. Can't emphasize that too much, prevents lawsuits.
Millennials and opiates = low seniority
@Uxe0k7a-1ghu I might agree with you to a certain extent, but that doesn't change the fact that your post reeks of someone who listens to way too much of the Rush Limbaugh show.
Unions are antiquated, we don’t live in the days where you had to fear for losing limbs or your life on the job. In fact, unions are bleeding this and other companies dry in today’s day and age. Unions allow for these 30+ yr members to sit in trucks all day and do nothing, because their jobs are protected for simply being in a union. Seniority? Please. Surplus determination should be based on performance, not seniority, just because you’ve been around for 30+ years should not automatically save your job, what nonsense. If I had a dime for every poor attitude craft employee that refused to put in an ounce of extra effort because of the toxic union mentality, I’d be rich. The entitlement of the union member is astounding.
In our environment today this company is trying to get its workforce to think and act like the more successful companies it wants to compete with, Google, Apple, Amazon, etc., do you think that’s possible with this dinosaur of a workforce we have in our union represented base? Do you think any of the companies I mentioned would be half as successful if they were being dragged down by an antiquated obsolete union workforce slowing their progress every step, of the way? The answer is no, they wouldn’t.
I’d rather have seniority during a surplus than not have seniority. So sorry millennials, you’ll have to wait for your next piercing.
September 15th is still Q3, and you are saying that AT&T will have to announce layoffs for the last quarter (Q2)? Does that mean that all of the surplus activity going on in ATO won't be reflected in whatever they report on Sep 15th?
Union contracts do not make matters worse for employees. They establish layoff procedures by seniority, not by favoritism, they set equal and transparent pay for equal job classifications, not by favoritism, and they establish benefits and promote good working conditions. Educate yourself with labor history.
sweet, trim the FAT, we need more Millennials
WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE 50+, so ....If your ARE losing your job in GOOD times, to Ageism you are out of luck, many corporations just like AT&T follow these discriminatory practices. Remember In bad times, unions can't protect their members from layoffs, wage and benefit reductions and tougher working conditions. In fact, union contracts often seem to make things worse.
